From reading the linked article, I get the impression that the problem has little to do with sea level rise and everything to do with sinking of the levees.

NEW ORLEANS - They should flood it and then plant corn once the water goes down.

Win / Win for the state

What part of begin planning doesn't register?

15 downvotes and counting, good example as to why LA is last in just about every statistical category.

I didn't downvote you. I don't completely disagree with you. But saying that an entire area is a "lost cause" is extreme IMO when you consider how many things can happen in several decades. We don't know everything about the environment/sea level rise nor can we predict human invention.

SE LA is a lost cause. The sooner it is accepted and planning begins
A possible fix would be to allow the Mississippi to change course thru Morgan City like it seems to want to, and let NOLA drink salt water. That would also fix the pot holes and culcha problems.

Certainly there is an engineer out there with the right plan.

There are plenty of examples where nature has had the shite kicked out of it. This could be one of them if they would quit playing politics.

Sen. Bill Cassidy said getting additional federal funding from Congress for the lifts is no slam dunk, but he’s confident it will happen. What’s more worrisome, he said, is the share of the costs the state of Louisiana is going to have to cover up-front, approximately $300 million.

quote:

“The state's already going to have a difficult time coming up with its portion of the rebuilt Katrina levees,” Cassidy said, referring to the state’s $1.7 billion share of the recently completed $14 billion project. “Now we're speaking of more state money going forward” to cover the levee lifts.

The state is basically in default on the original $1.7B, now they're asking for additional money for the levee lifts.

Jindal kicked the "repayment can" down the road and so did Edwards, all the while asking Congress for loan forgiveness.

They didn’t this story is click bait.

The Corps built the flood walls to be good through 2057 anticipating regional subsidence and sea level rise. They built the levees to what they needed to be in the current year plus a little, because Congress limited their authority to build to the height required “at the time of construction” in Public Law 109-234. You generally don’t build levees all at once anyway because the base would have to be huge to raise it that high all at once. You do it over time to let the soils underneath gain strength over time so you don’t have to demolish all the houses that back up against a levee.

Congress authorized a study for the Corps to look at raising the levees further to sustain what they already built back in 2014, but didn’t fund it until 2018 which is why they’re just getting started on it. They had a public meeting explaining this awhile back.

This guy gets it. The State has been letting interest compound for years to the tune of tens of millions of dollars annually by not starting to pay their share of the original post-Katrina work.

That’s not correct. The first payment is due next year.

Louisiana's first payment is dLINK is due in August 2020, with $100 million estimated to be owed annually for 30 years.

But the summer of 2019 brings with it a new level of concern. That’s because it’s the first hurricane season since the Army Corps of Engineers officially notified Congress that global sea-level rise and southeast Louisiana’s soft, subsiding soils have caused earthen levees to sink faster than expected, requiring another $800 million to meet the level of risk reduction it promised in 2007. Van Heerden said those new costs could have been avoided if the Corps had followed the advice in the Team Louisiana report to include “freeboard,” extra room at the top of the levees to account for anticipated sinking for the whole life of the project, through 2057.

“This is inexcusable,” he said. “When you have a $14 billion project, you build in freeboard.”
freeboard was build in.

I'm quite sure there's a breach in the levee around here. There's been a ton of water building up on Patterson this past month. I wouldn't want to be living around there.

it is not a breach but seepage from under the levee. as the river has been high for an extended amount of time. this is going on all over the MS river levee
