New Orleans levees sinking faster than planned

quote:NEW ORLEANS — This is the 14th hurricane season since New Orleans’ storm protection system of levees and floodwalls failed, the second since the Corps of Engineers completed an 11-year, $14.6 billion project to repair and restore that system.
“The fact that these levees won't be certifiable in four years is a travesty."
But the summer of 2019 brings with it a new level of concern. That’s because it’s the first hurricane season since the Army Corps of Engineers officially notified Congress that global sea-level rise and southeast Louisiana’s soft, subsiding soils have caused earthen levees to sink faster than expected, requiring another $800 million to meet the level of risk reduction it promised in 2007. Van Heerden said those new costs could have been avoided if the Corps had followed the advice in the Team Louisiana report to include “freeboard,” extra room at the top of the levees to account for anticipated sinking for the whole life of the project, through 2057.
“This is inexcusable,” he said. “When you have a $14 billion project, you build in freeboard.”

Jefferson Parish's levees are bigger than I've ever seen...
They were upgraded just last year...

These assholes are either fear-mongering to get billions more or they're coming up with excuses to get more funding because they did a shitty job on the last project and need to fix it

All those people riding bicyles on top of it hasn't helped matters.

Bingo...!!!
The levee board in Orleans parish is the most corrupt board in the city.. Possibly worse than the S&WB..

All of SE LA is a lost cause. The sooner it is accepted and planning begins the better the state and country will be.

Eventually, probably so. Levees are expensive but moving an entire city or two is way more expensive. I think it makes sense to keep things going for now

If I had to flip a coin to see who goes first, Los Angeles or NOLA...
Not sure I'd gaf.

Van Heerden was silenced and told to GTFO back when these projects were going on after Katrina.....he was very adamant that they weren't doing the job the correct way...
I want to say he was fired and threatened to keep his mouth shut...

Sounds like someone is looking for some more vacation money.

I would think a couple passes by the SUV's the Levee Board uses to patrol the levees does more harm than a years worth of bicycle riding.
Nice troll.

Nature is going to win that battle. 100%.

Time to start picking and choosing what neighborhoods and towns will flood and let them go. South LA needs to begin coexisting with the river, not fighting it.

The Tragically Hip told us this years ago. New Orleans Is Sinking

The Corps seems to only do jobs where they screw up and guarantee lots of future work. The entire levee scheme is a scam on the american people that could have been avoided.
