What they were able to do is find a way to prove the theory using trigonometry WITHOUT circular logic -- something mathematicians have been trying to do for nearly 2,000 years.

Would be nice to see their proof.

Pythagorean Theorem can be proven with geometry (not using trig.).

You've posted 5-6 times in 3 pages about these teenage black girls (who did something positive). It'll be alright. They have support groups for people like you.

” But that isn’t quite true: in our lecture we present a new proof of Pythagoras’s Theorem which is based on a fundamental result in trigonometry—the Law of Sines—and we show that the proof is independent of the Pythagorean trig identity \sin^2x + \cos^2x = 1.

But the law of sines is trig.

Thats what I read, too but if they are using a trig law to prove the Pythagorean theorem - aren’t they still using trigonometry??

quote:

all the fundamental formulae of trigonometry are themselves based upon the truth of the Pythagorean Theorem.”

Or does their paper deal with semantics? In such they are using a ‘law’ not a ‘proof’ ???

I don't know, I always sucked at math. But I think we should all be glad that they are, at least as i understand it, working hard in the classroom and not doing some "trigonometry was invented by a white male and is racist" shite. Obviously some posters here are going to devalue it no matter what

Our Slogan is 'No Excellence Without Hard Labor.' So, they definitely push us

In today's academic climate, this should be good news. Seriously, we should be grateful there are still kids taught to work hard and excel. But I know there are a lot of angry old men in here who would rather they be illiterate hoodrats instead of accomplish something.

Yes.

FWIW, there are several geometrical proofs of Pythagoras' Theorem. That is the basis of the theorem that trigonometry is drawn from. So it is not circular.

Whether they actually proved what they set out to prove is immaterial. It's so refreshing to see news stories about positive things happening in south LA.

These young ladies are spending their free time thinking while so many teenagers have their faces glued to snap chat.

Those are some of the greatest minds that have ever lived. Why the comparison?

They are doing something positive and showing an interest in math and STEM. Obviously they're not making world changing discoveries, but they're not carjacking old ladies and having kids out of wedlock either.

Congrats on projecting a racial non sequitur.

Article would be better to say, “Teenagers from NOLA East present on Pythagorean’s Theorem to mathematicians”. Unfortunately the clickbait seduces some.
