I just can't justify the cost of a home gym vs regular gym. I only pay 35 a month and have everything I'll ever need. If I were to get the amount of weight I need and the proper equipment that won't break on me with the weight I use, it'll be over 2k. That's only a power rack and weights. That'll take almost 5 years to recover the costs.
I'd also want a dumbbell set that goes up to 150's.
On the other hand, when the boys get older I might do it once they get into sports.
For me its about time. I value it greatly and having the home gym helps save tons and tons of time. I have 3 little boys (5,4, & 1) so time is the thing most valuable to me.
I got an elitefts power rack, texas power bar, eltitefts flat/incline adjustable bench and the fight gone bad clock for 800 off of craigslist. Had to drive to houston to get it but overall it was a good deal. I then go the weights off facebook for cheap then invested in one set of used ivankos. Overall I have 400 or so invested in the weights and about 700lbs.
Also have the power block dumbbells but started with just the small urethane set and upgraded with expansion packs and stands as money allowed and now have them going all the way to 125lbs. Anymore than that and I would need to start buying fixed dbs as the adjustable get to big past that point.
All the rest is just fluff that I like/want. Its become my only real hobby and its something I don't mind investing in with 3 boys that already like to come in there and do bodyweight stuff and beg to do more. I buy quality now as I want them to be able to use it when they get older and I am now established enough that I live by the motto, buy once, suffer once.
But I understand about the investment. Don't do a home gym thinking its going to save money, because it won't especialy if you get into it like me.

Where is the best place to pick up cheap used weights? Craigslist?
really just looking for an incline bench and dumbbells for now
honestly for dumbbells start with the smallest powerblock urethane set you can afford and upgrade with the expansion packs. Or you could do olympic db handles off of amazon that you can upgrade later and get the reps fitness weights(10s, 5s, 2.5s) and oso collars and go that route. Only other thing woul dbe to find some used ironmasters on craigslist.
As far as bench goes, I suggest buying a nice one but understand if that is not an option. The ironmaster super incline bench is a cheap alternative that gets good praise other than the 21" height.
But search craigslist.

this is kinda the way i was thinking, would be cheaper than the powerblock and selectech. for this option, what is the max weight i could get on one dumbbell? are 10s the largest weight for them?
just from looking at them it looks like 4 weights per side, so 80 per dumbbell?
i guess you could use bigger than 10lb weights on the dumbbells, but seems like the bigger size of the plates may get in the way

I have the powerblock dumbbells too. Expensive but well worth the investment. Can't say enough good things about those.

selectech sucks, dont get them. As far as db handles, with rep fitness plates, you can prolly get about 140 lbs on the dbs. I know on the rogue handles you can get over 140lbs. You will have to stick to thin 10lbs plates. Larger plates are only good for rows.
I will say olympic handles are pain in the arse and you need to make sure you get some nice collars. I had cheap at first adn almost broke my foot when the collar slipped off.

I agree and think that's what will happen when mine get older. Those are good prices on that equipment.

yea I have gotten great deals on everything. Key is patience and setting up craigslist to alert you when something with the keywords you want pops up and then most importantly be ready to jump on it when it does come up.
I got the sorinex hurricane for 500 plus 200 to ship.
Sorinex lat pull down for 400 picked up in BR
Rogers squat pro for 1500 plus 200 to ship
got the xebex airdyne bike and rower on black friday for 500 each and they are normally around 1000 each.
key is patience to wait on sales and search skills.

It's a gimmick, you don't need it. You're the only dumb one here for wasting your money.
Posted on 2/3/17 at 12:08 pm to DrewDawg13
nobody said you need it but its not a gimmick just provides variety and helps with shoulder pain for a lot of lifters that have those problems.
Buying any nice piece of commercial grade equipment is never ever a waste of money unless you over pay.
99% of the people on this board could get the results they want with a set of gymnasitc rings and if diet is right can build a better body than 99% of the people out there.
SO by your logic all fitness equipment or gym memberships are a waste of money and dumb except gymnastic rings.
and Sorry some of us have money to blow on things we enjoy. One day you will get there.

Have you ever tried going to a gym and seeing if they will sell you equipment if they are thinking about upgrading?
Posted on 2/3/17 at 1:37 pm to Hu_Flung_Pu
yea I have left my card at a few places. The bigger your city though better chance you will get call backs on it. Gyms are lake charles don't upgrade much.

There are a few companies out there that'll scoop up closing gyms and sell the equipment for a fraction of the price. They'll have some gems every now and again. Found some revolver plates 3 years ago.
