Why not a law that says no smartphones for anyone under 18?
Because it’s a stupid idea

So, lemme get this straight...
Hormones to stop puberty and wreck your hormones forever under 16... No parental permission needed just a willing teacher.
Look at a social media app under 16.. Permission needed.
JBE is one fricked up, groomer dude. He cannot leave office fast enough. Biggest gaslighting mistake Louisana ever made.

Minors in Louisiana will need parental permission before accessing social media accounts.
State Sen. Patrick McMath, R-Covington, authored SB162, which states children ages 16 and younger must have consent from a parent or legal guardian to have a social media account. Gov. John Bel Edwards signed the bill.
How can this be monitored or enforced? Seems impossible.

I mean I plan on doing this as a parent with my kids til at least 14. Does Louisiana (or any state like TX) need a law telling people how to parent? Just more government over reach.

I just don't see how this will work. The law states that this is aimed at social media companies. It seems that any website that allows public posts could now be used by users to post most anything they want. Take TD, for instance. You are allowed to post videos, images, respond other posts and upvote/ downvote.
There are ways around this law.

I'd much rather parents just police their own children.

:kige:
This law is common sense. First of all, minors can't agree to the user agreements for these accounts.
13 year old me had unsupervised internet access in the mid 90s and the FIRST thing I did was use it to access "chat rooms" intended for adults and pretend to be older than I was. The Internet was still mostly anonymous then but things have completely changed. Kids want to be able to have an online life that is not anonymous and is fully integrated into their real social life. I guess it is not obvious to everybody why that is harmful, but that is the last thing I would want for my teen.
My son is now the same age I was when the internet came to average Americans, but has LESS access (in our home) than I did back then. We do not have any social media accounts and will not allow him to until he is 18. Letting young teens waste time trying to manage an online persona in this world is not going to get them ahead in life. It can destroy their self confidence at a time when they are trying to figure out how to fit in.

The prevalence of structured/scheduled extracurriculars for kids has skyrocketed.
So?
Another of the more hidden ills of smart phones with kids is the lack of problem solving skills. Due to the phone, there is no longer the need to plan, coordinate, solicit help, etc.
It’s a real thing.
The number of extracurriculars, even if the dubious claim that they have increased is true, is irrelevant.

Agreed but unfortunately many parents are just as immature and irresponsible as the kids they parent.

I’m sure the majority of parents would be super comfortable with their pre-teens coordinating their own rides from school to their extracurriculars back home each day. Yep. No concerns there at all.

I bet you claim to be a conservative too
There’s a difference between freedoms for adults and limiting what kids are able to do.
Nothing at all anti-conservative about needing parental permission for things. It isn’t making the government the gate keeper; it’s making the parents.
