NOLA -Baton Rouge passenger rail link

Why? If the thing stops twice it'll be faster to drive. No way the train can operate at high speeds with the state of the tracks and rail traffic in the area.

Plus they will be a dump and crime-riddled within 5 years.

I know some of you don't like reading the linked article, so I'll post that here too:

Passenger rail between Baton Rouge and New Orleans has been studied extensively. According to the Baton Rouge Area Chamber, a poll conducted of 1,050 registered voters in Ascension, East Baton Rouge, Jefferson, Orleans, St. James, and St. John Parishes in February and March of 2019 found that 75% of people felt positively toward the passenger rail, with 63% stating interest in riding it.

Look, how it’s being payed for may be an issue, but this country has been needing an infrastructure boost.

Completely agree.

Commuter rail isn’t it

Yeah, like commuter rail.

Speak for yourself, Chicago's METRA is awesome. Or at least it was before Covid.

So the equivalent of four years' worth of fossil fuel subsidies. Sounds more than reasonable.

It would have been much easier to run it like a suburban commuter rail system used in big cities all over the country that extends the routes out past their urban mass transit system.

That's true. Amtrak is concerned with feeding passengers to it's New Orleans station. So they are likely doing no more than one or two trains a day.

Regional commuter rail is more in line with what the area needs.

It would be awesome if we had a system like that here.

They can build it but it will never turn a profit

Do rails in other cities actually turn a profit? It would be a really cool thing to have if it went from near the rail hub east of Downtown BR to the New Orleans Train Station. Tops along the way should be around SEBR( Highland Road area), Ascension Parish(Tanger area), Gramercy, Laplace, MSY Airport.

Someone like me in Gonzales would absolutely use it for day trips to New Orleans, Saints games, Smoothie King arena events etc. depending on the last train back.

If it cost $10 per passenger for round trip. $15 uber to the AP station, $20 to ride for me and the GF, walk to dome/smoothie king arena, $15 uber back to house from AP station. Add uber trips to the FQ if not for something at the Dome/Arena.

Still Totally worth being able to get shitcanned drunk and not have to drive nor pay for parking down there.

This idea surfaces every few years and fizzles because it's basically a slow milk run. High speed is out of the question because of weak infrastructure and low passenger volume.

I agree.

But I think the Baton Rouge-New Orleans rail link won't be very popular unless they can keep the average speed in the 70+ mph range, which means they'll need to move 90-100 mph in some stretches to make up for the stops in St.George, LaPlace, and Gonzales.

So that means the track has to be updated mostly likely - especially the elevated parts over the spillway.

There aren’t going to be any stops between Br and Nola if this Amtrak plan wins.

It would get massive usage if it had a stop at MSY

This Amtrak plan is terrible news

Having a stop in Ascension would be tight I guess.

You mean the highly/densely populated areas the side of some of our states? Where not everyone has a car?

Tax breaks are not the same as direct deposits from the government.

What is the obsession with rail? Same thing in Houston with the one to Dallas. No one is going to use it

What’s the need to travel between Houston and Dallas? It’s two similarly sized cities and similar amenities.

There’s reasons for people from Baton Rouge to go to New Orleans. Especially the airport.

Then have a bus which would be orders of magnitude cheaper

I guess some people either don’t have a vehicle, or just prefer to not have to deal with vehicular traffic for whatever it is they need to go to.

Every plan I read included stops in AP and MSY for sure.

That was the original plan before Amtrak took over.

Amtrak doesn’t stop like that
