That video was so realistic, all those slow arse drivers in the left lane…

Yes, I've taken it many times. Never said I liked it though. All I'm saying is they should consider higher walls or extended guard rails...

The gas tax hasn’t increased in Louisiana since the 80s You’re literally paying like 20¢ and wondering why our roads are the way they are.
There is truth to this, and I'd imagine the revenues generated from this tax may have stagnated with more fuel efficient vehicles.

Props to the animation guy on the video. He put in his research and made it realistic Louisiana with a bunch of slow arse cars clogging up the left lane.

So in other words, 2065.
I know things in south Louisiana are more entangled, both physically and financially, than up here in the northern part of the state. But the DOTD and the contractors are kicking arse on the I-20 rehab and the new Jimmie Davis Red River Bridge in Bossier City. By all accounts, both projects are ahead of schedule. They also finished the I-220 Barksdale extension pretty quickly as well.

Will I still be able to get to the Golden Nugget?

It was 1990, close enough, 80% of the state-motor-fuel-tax revenues are directed to road/bridge maintenance construction.
Obviously, it's not enough to make any improvements or maintain the roads and infrastructure in the state.

I think it needs to be completely reorganized and apparently so does the legislature as they are attempting to do just that. You have 4300 employees and a $19 BILLION dollar backlog of work. And anyone who has ever lived through the replacement of a little old two lane suspension bridge over a canal wonders why it takes so long to complete such a project. Add to that the embarrassments like emergency closures of bridges only months after an official "inspection" and skepticism of the current model is understandable.
The problems aren't solely on the department. But at some point you have to start trying to figure out how to operate and complete your mission without blaming a lack of funds and demanding more tax dollars.

Except I think this is the biggest issue
You go try to build a house today using a budget from 1990 and see how far it gets you.

In the meantime, China rebuilds NOLA, all of the East and 9th ward with new infrastructure and high rises in a year ...

Five years to build a freaking bridge
It’s an elevated structure from Ryan St to the 210 exchange near Sulphur.
It’s not just the bridge. This is a pretty large project.

The problem is staring you right in the face.
Ever wonder why the backlog is so enormous? It should be pretty obvious.. because there isn’t enough money to fund it.
The gas tax is worth less than half of what it was worth the last time it was increased. Specifically, it would have to increase from $0.20/gal to $0.51/gal just to account for inflation since it was last changed in 1990. And that still wouldn’t actually get you to the same funding per mile driven, due to increases in fuel efficiency over that time.
And then, even if you did manage to increase the gas tax enough to get highway funding back to 1990 levels, you still have the massive backlog from the past 35 years.
The only reason we are seeing so many Louisiana projects move right now is the influx of federal money from the infrastructure bill a few years ago. That’ll dry up and we’ll be right back to square one.

That whole Westlake Exit/On ramp situation is going to be as tricky as the bridge itself
Posted on 11/3/25 at 1:59 pm to ragincajun03
Still don't understand how they can have a toll on a federal highway

Oh frick that excuse. They've been collecting gas taxes on every single gallon of gas sold for all these years. And they collected taxes on all the vehicles sold, a portion of which goes to roads. You know what they weren't doing. WORK. Its been the same shite for as long as I've lived in this state. WE DONT HAVE ENOUGH MONEY. You know what you have way too much of? State employees. And all that comes with employees- benefits and retirement plans. Its a fricking joke. more and more employees to do less and less. And then blame the lack of progress on the taxpayer's unwillingness to agree to the continued fleecing. And that doesn't even begin to address the games the legislature and/or governor play with tax collections?
Can't wait to vote NO for the next proposed "infrastructure improvements". This dump can rot and I'll enjoy watching it smolder in the rearview mirror as I'm leaving.

Let’s try to take this a step at a time.
Do you dispute that the gas tax, the primary source of highway funding in Louisiana, is worth less per mile in 2025 than it was worth in 1990?
