This.

Avoid LG, Samsung, etc...

Remember, the more bells and whistles, the more that will go wrong.

The Whirlpool fridge we bought, when we had to replace the POS Samsung has been great. Don't mess with any Samsung appliances. We had problems with a washer, a fridge and a dishwasher.

The Samsung ice makers have a small heater built into them that's supposed to have stopped the problem, but it didn't. We paid for a five year extended warranty, and the repairmen had to come out a couple of times each year. They replaced three of those heaters. I never understood how it was helping anyway.

The repair guys told us the design of the fridge, with the icemaker inside the refrigerator causes the freezing up. It's in the fridge so you can get ice and water in the dooor, outside the fridge. One thing that causes the freezing up problem is when you put warm leftovers in the frige it causes condensation that freezes up. On the repairmen's recommendation, we always let leftovers cool down for 20-30 minutes before putting them in. The thing still froze up, possibly just because someone held the door open while getting out multiple items.

The repair company was a locally owned store that a buddy owned. His sons were the guys coming to fix the fridge. Lowes customers kept the repair end of their business really busy.

I bought a Hisense from Lowe’s about 6-7 months ago, which is apparently a Whirlpool subsidiary. It was the ‘Deal of the Day’ so it was $1400 for a 26 cf fridge. Water dispenser is inside the fridge, and ice maker is in the freezer, so it’s got fewer bells and whistles. Plenty of room and the door storage is twice what it was in our old Kenmore fridge

Everytime I see the appliance threads I go buy a lottery ticket because statistically I should have had an issue at some point in my 49 years of being alive. No one in my family has had to replace a fridge. My parents still have a wonderful yellowish one from when I was 4-5. The other one they have is prolly 10 years old. My granny has one that has got to be approaching 60 years old and has been outside in the carport for prolly 20 years I've had my deep freezer for 15 years. I'm going to have quite the collection of machines that refrigerate or freeze stuff.

I seriously love responses like this. Only machines I hate are clothes dryers. All of the electric ones fricking suck donkey dick. If at all possible, get a gas dryer.

An appliance repair guy that just fixed our 12 yr old fridge and I had a discussion about new fridges, etc. He said stay away from LG & Samsung and don't buy one with all of the bells and whistles; go more middle of the road (less shite to break). Get side by side bc of how the freezer & ice maker are designed. With the exception of the 2 listed above, the rest are about the same.

I just buy a bag occasionally at one of those machines and dump it in the bin

Get a stand-alone ice maker. I have one in the wet-bar, which is adjacent to my kitchen. The refrigerator/freezer makes ice intermittently, without rhyme or reason.

You could also get ice trays.

Avoid Samsung if you frequently use the ice maker. Mine freezes up and I have to pull out the tray and defrost it every 2 or 3 weeks using a hair dryer. Apparently there is a known defect with Samsung ice makers. Bought mine in 2015 so they might have fixed it since then.

I bought mine in 2019 and they have replaced the ice maker three times. And it still freezes up. total pain in the arse. It also only crushes ice, it doesn't give you cubes even though it is set to cubed ice.

I usually jam a big bath towel in there and use a ZEP spray bottle with hot water. It is way faster than the blow dryer method.

Don’t get one that promises a lower global warming potential. It has a lower GWP because the thing won’t work within a year and people don’t know how to fix them.

If you get whirlpool, get Gold models. They will have a gold halo in the whirlpool logo. Online descriptions don't always show them as gold.

People are dogging LG...but I've had great experience with mine (I have 2 in my kitchen). As long as you avoid ice/water dispensers in the door, they are solid.

Mine are bottom freezer French Door models, and they have been awesome.
