BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - A baby gadget company has now developed a device that can help prevent the tragedy of a hot car death. The eClip is a small device that pairs with a smartphone to help remind parents of a baby in the backseat. It prevents something called Forgotten Baby Syndrome, or FBS. “However hard it is for you to understand, or to even accept, it is a problem,” says Michael Braunold.

quote:

“There have been a number of cases, unfortunately a high number of cases where in fact people have driven to work, not realizing or forgetting the fact that they had to drop their child off at the daycare center on the way.”

quote:

Since 1998, over 800 children have died by being forgotten in a car that was too hot or too cold. In most of these cases, the caregiver simply forgot. It’s something every parent thinks will never happen to them.

I find it incredibly disturbing that this is happening so often that they had to create this to remind you to take your child out of the car. That should be the first thing you do before anything else.

ETA: It is paired with your smartphone to alert you. So the company expects you will have your phone with you when you exit the car but not your child. Ridiculous.

Sleep deprived minds can do things the rest of us would never dream of doing.

I was somewhat worried about this before having our first kid. 3 years and 2 kids later, I have no understanding of how this happens

I understand, but I've been there before. If you are that exhausted you shouldn't leave the house and drive.

I would have to go deaf to forget my children in the car. They never stop talking.

It's more of a routine thing. If your normal routine is not to have the baby you may not remember they are back there if all you normally do is go to your work, especially if they fall asleep. shite happens when you have children and mistakes happen. It is easy to judge someone for being an idiot but more often than not it is just a tragic thing that could happen to anyone that is remotely busy or distracted.

Your work OK with you calling in because you're tired?

That aside, deviating from normal schedules only exacerbates the issue.

This all started with air bags. Babies in the front seat were getting killed in minor fender benders. Parents were forced to put kids in back seat.

Perhaps a better air bag design or a baby seat that could withstand the force of an air bag.

If you're that sleep deprived, you shouldn't be strapping in to a 1 to 2 ton hunk of metal.

Tired to the point of not being able to remember if you took your kid out of the car? Yeah, because the product I'd be putting out would be shite anyways.

Also, there's this thing called public transportation, cabs, ubers, ect ect.

Most people this happens to probably cant afford this device, nor are they responsible enough to implement it appropriately.

The real cause of these deaths is stupidity, ignorance, and carelessness. Make a device that can make someone care about their child's health and you'll be good.

What’s sad is that most people probably realize they don’t have their phone faster than not having their kid.

So yea this will probably work

But....in a world where you remember your phone but not your child, this could actually work.

Which is why it’s better to just put your cellphone in the back seat with your kid. That way you will certainly know you forgot something when you exit your car (cellphone or kid).

I am certain I would never forget my kid in the car. But I'm not going to complain about something that will make sure it never happens.
