I thought I remember that they built Aux to be able to replace low sill but they were able to salvage it so they ended up using them in conjunction.

Well that is obvious. The Auxillary was built so the 30% flow required by law to flow to the Atchafalaya River wouldn’t have to go through one structure. It was not the concrete part of the structure in 1973 that was about to fail. It was the wing dams and the ground beneath the concrete structure being eroded from scouring because so much water was trying to get through the structure. My dad worked for the levee board in Concordia Parish in 1973 and saw them dump riprap(boulders) the size of houses on the river side of the structure and could see them tumbling with the flow on the other side of the structure. It came extremely close to failing in 1973.

Other than the death toll and smiting of Morgan City, the worst part is the uprover migration of the saltwater wedge, which would result in New Orleans and much of the river parishes losing their drinking water supply. They would have to install massively expensive desalination plants ASAP.

I only read up to the end of Part IV last night, but they reference the Auxiliary structure in their report. In the synopsis at the beginning of the paper they mention the importance of the Auxillary Structure being completed and include in their "Flood of 198x" doomsday scenario.

I can’t recall which part we were in, but the structure has a shaft (for lack of a better way to describe) with access to the bottom via an elevator. There was mechanical equipment, etc. It was pretty large. It was a long time ago, so details are fuzzy.

Water follows the path of least resistance. Miss R. would once again change its delta and flow down the Atchafalaya River. All ports from BR to the mouth would no longer be able to handle ocean going vessels.

The report actually shitcans that idea.

Because of the reduced flow and sediments going down the new channel, a 50ft draft channel could be maintained at little cost and the GOM would back up the channel as an estuary.

Right. Salt water intrusion fricking up process and cooling water in all the plants and contaminating drinking water is the much bigger problem.

I agree about the saltwater intrusion, but not the idea that the ports would be unaffected. Reduced water flow means that the suspended sediments would settle that much faster. I've seen too many engineers scream "That's theoretically impossible!" when their views get ruined because they were too myopic to take into consideration that shite happens that you never planned for.
