Lets just say way back in the 1960's/1970's in New Orleans, people used to pay us young kids .25 on a dollar for food coupons out of newspapers. Thursdays and Sundays papers were full of food coupons.
Also, once a year my Dad would get a tip at the track which was money.

Every Italian from the New Orleans metro area claims they are related to Carlos Marcello.

My landlord is in the Russian mob and he doesn't even try to hide it.

My little hometown in Louisiana seemed to attract quite a few older couples who looked and talked nothing like people from the south. Nothing important exists in or near this town, and most were at early retirement age anyway (not a typical time in life for a cross country job change).
In high school, I was a firm believer that our town was being used in the witness protection program to hide witnesses or smaller criminals. Never any proof of course, but who picks up and moves several states away in your 50s to a tiny town (pop. ~1300) in Louisiana when you have no ties to the area?

He died in Nov 2013. I believe they moved him from Sandstone to Stillwater (where, coincidentally my little brother lives--not in the prison, just the town).
I never got to visit Mike. I wanted to do a biography (as did many with a lot more clout than I have!). He wasn't into such things.
that is a great "fun" fact too!

Used to work in Philadelphia. My supervisor went to High School with Joey Merlino. When Joey got out of jail my boss went to his welcome home party (missed work). I am pretty sure my supervisor wasn't involved in the mob but he was pretty good friends with the big dog in the mob. He used to tell us stories all the time about the two growing up together.

So, did you represent his son Anthony also?

My Granduncle. Owned his own little curb store. It was rumored that it was a storage point between points A-C for narcotics. Nothing was ever proven and he never got busted. He must have been prompt with his bribes.

Sam Maceo?
Used to run or was a "partner" in the Balinese Room.
A buddies step daughter is supposedly fairly distantly relative of Castellano I believe.

The Galveston story he posted is a slight variation of one I've read on another website, with one or two key details changed.

Dixie Mafia
The father of a girl I went to HS with was probably affiliated with them in some way. I know he was a bootlegger (it was a dry parish at the time) and if you're involved in one thing, you're probably involved in other things. He had several businesses-furniture store, boat/outdoor dealership, etc, that never seemed to do much "business," but he and his family always had a very nice lifestyle. Great guy, would do anything for you, and was always more than kind to me. But you knew he was shady as frick.
As you probably know, the Dixie Mafia wasn't mafia per se, but a loose affiliation of criminals. It had little organizational structure, but its nominal leader was based out of Biloxi. It still exists, but like its Italian namesake, is a shell of its former self.
My dad spent many years as a prosecutor and had some dealings with them. He didn't regard them as anything more than garden variety crooks.
ETA: After posting in this thread, I'm getting a bail bond ad

My wife is 100% Sicilian and from nola and her grandmother was a gagliano. But everyone is really old now and the younger kids are all legit.
Now my wifes real dad gamble every day and sometimes works for his bookie, and i have met him a few times. The guy looks, talks and acts just like he is out a movie. And i know for a fact he runs one of the biggest books in the city. He has a website but you still pay in person, never understood the point in that.

I know but either way you are open to money laundering among other things which carries more time. I guess its easier for him to get everyone's picks in this way.

John Staluppi. I represented one of his companies years ago. He was famously in the mob.
I also met Michael Franzese a couple of years ago, but he was speaking at a men's prayer breakfast.

Yes, my late Uncle Greek. Independence was the North Shore hot spot for the Marcello clan up until the 90's. No book was made or deals done on the North shore without Uncle Greek's approval. And my great aunt was mad as hell when Uncle Greek used her linen chest to store all the cash.

There was a old guy that had a small house built in the middle of nowhere around were I live now. Real nice guy, but we knew he was hiding for some reason. For sure a dago. This was back in the late 1960's.
