He got into test pilot school because he was such a natural pilot and then graduated test pilot school basically learning the engineering required along the way in spite of a commandant that hated him and wanted him drummed out of the school. He got near the edge of space in an airplane that he pretty much stole from the Air Force and beat NASA to the altitude he reached because they pissed him off by passing him over for the astronaut corps for not being an engineer, and he damn near died doing it (giant balls threw off the weight distribution of the aircraft). After all of those shenanigans, the Air Force still gave him air wings to command and he managed to run his wings so well that he was able to put up the first perfect deployment of an air wing crossing an ocean (no plane that left the U.S. turned back for mechanical problems or pilot issues even with the new difficulties of mid-air refueling). Somewhere in all of that, he found time to train the pilots in his wings so well that they were pretty much impossible to beat in gunnery trials while he was still waxing everyone's arse in them. He also commanded air wings all over Southeast Asia during our fun times there. He did all of that having started by enlisting as a private in the army. And he sold a shite ton of AC/Delco parts after.
Now, I'm sure he didn't give you the respect you think you deserved, but I'm also pretty sure he has earned every right to treat you like a douchebag.

The Right Stuff book is excellent. However, probably even more arrogant and jealous than Yeager was Scott Crossfield. Both incredibly talented pilots. I thought it ironic that Crossfield, who had piloted the X-15 and D558-1 to supersonic fame, died in a single engine plane crash in Georgia a few years ago as an old man.

The book is great. It made the author, Tom Wolfe, a household name. As good as the movie is, the book is even better.

Chuck is 8 years older than Larry Hagman - and only 13 years younger than Hayden Rorke (Dr. Bellows) - episode was filmed almost 50 years ago - and he's outlived Rorke by almost 30 years - and Hagman 3 so far.
Hell, Chuck is closer to 100 than 85 right now.

I read his autobiography in high school. One of the best books I ever read. It chronicles his whole life. I watched the Right Stuff probably 100 times as a kid. I loved that movie.

His biography sits on shelf in my living room, he is truly a hero in every sense of the word, a natural pilot with unmatched skills and balls as big as the planet.

Generally speaking, I don't think you can accomplish a feat like being the first person on earth to ever travel faster than the speed of sound without being extremely confident in your abilities and skills. A lot of people tend to look at this confidence as arrogance but I think a lot of it is due to the fact that most people can't comprehend what it's like to believe in your own abilities at that level.

Chuck Yeager was/is a badass. In one day he shot down 5 Me109s and another day he shot down 4 FW190s. That's 9 kills in 2 days.
