Coincidentally, I started reading The Right Stuff today. Own the movie, never read the book.

Most arrogant prick I ever had the misfortune to meet back when he was given the Omar Bradley Award at the Independence Bowl. Major League douche bag.

But did he have any trouble dragging his brass balls around?

Better than the movie. Those guys had nuts the size of boiling balls. The book focuses a lot more on the test pilot program before NASA was a thing.

I can't remember details but I know there were strange predictions about what would happen if a human went faster than the speed of sound.

Crazy predictions kind of like the predictions that came with Y2K and turning in the large haydron collider. There's ALWAYS a nut job right around the corner to tell you how the world is going to end if you do some amazing shite.

When you do badass shite like break the sound barrier, shoot down a dozen German planes including a jet), make your way back to England AFTER being shot down AND talk the brass into reversing policy and letting you fly combat missions again......well, you're allowed to be a prick.

And that's scratching the surface.
