Three fricking years?!?!?

Holy shite. Imagine having your entire nest egg just taken from you and it taking three years to get it back. After a few weeks I’d turn into Gerard Butler from Law Abiding Citizen

Yeah so legally it's worse than that .

Seized money has no rights, doesn't require counsel to be present, and is presumed guilty until proven innocent .

It's up to YOU the property owner to prove you have legal possession and weren't doing anything illegal with it before the court gives it back to you.

Yeah that’s the part that burns my arse more than anything - the idea that the burden of proof is on the property owner. I know that it varies by state, but it’s complete and utter bullshite.

When you read the justifications agencies use for CAF it always amounts to “it makes it easier to punish drug dealers when we can’t prove they actually did anything wrong” and “it’s a great revenue stream.” Like.. they don’t even bother trying to create a rational argument because it’s such an indefensible fricking practice.

Also at people trying to place all the blame for this bullshite on the federal government as if local agencies aren’t just as guilty.

I’m pro cop a lot of times, but civil forfeiture laws are some of the worst in existence (along with some homeowner/real estate/squatter bullshite laws). The idea that literally all a cop has to do is say “I think this is drug money” and they have access to and can literally steal anything they want is absolute dogshit ridiculous. I can’t believe laws like that still exist. And I don’t even care why they exist, but something needs to change with them.

And what’s worse is that once it’s taken the bullshite you have to do to get it back (if you ever even get it back) is ludicrous.

The government will claim.the suit is moot now.

As I recall, I believe SCOTUS shot down a similar argument in a case thus term.

Once you start CAF against Bill Gates, or Nancy Pelosi, or Zuckerberg, all of a sudden there will be legislation in Congress to bring it to a halt. But not a second sooner.

Another reason to not talk or chit chat with the cops when pulled over.

This is grand larceny, theft, whatever you wish to call it, pure and simple.

If this doesn't piss you off, not much will.

I fricking hate cops. Yes, I’m generalizing, but in my experience they crave power & will straight up lie to you with no reservations. I don’t believe all cops are bad, but huge a percentage are, and that’s enough for me.

This website loves cops. They would let pig cops frick their wives and then ask “does it please the crown?”

There is a broad middle ground, but it takes a small level of intelligence to reach. I can explain it to you with small words if you want.

There are legit reasons for carrying cash and sometimes large amounts. I buy, sell, trade and own old Mopars; mostly 68-70 B bodies and it's still a cash business particularly with muscle cars but traveling with a lot of dough is risky.

you should be able to carry as much money as you want without the police seizing it for years. i do wish this land was a bit more free on certain issues, but tougher on actual violent offenders.

as J.G. Wentworth once said, it's your money use it when you need it.

I don't agree with either, but I'd bet a lot of these same people were good with vaccine mandates and Covid lockdowns. They are perfectly fine with the government's boot on someone else's neck when they support the cause

Civil forfeiture should be outlawed but this comment here is right on the money

I have read about this happening in Louisiana to Vietnamese shrimpers. They do business in cash and have been stopped w/$30k. They were on the way to buy a boat and were stopped.
Don’t think it can’t happen to you. There is no specified amount of cash so it's discretionary.

i don't hate cops, but when i was a teenager they literally took two 20 dollar bills out of my front pockets while searching my jeans said thanks. never gave back to me.

not a bs story. absolutely happened to me and as a scared teen nothing i could really do about it. they took advantage of me.

i know another guy who grew up in the hood (ny area) and his first experience with cops was sitting on some steps outside and a cop put a gun to the back of his head and asked him and his friend if they were doing drugs. more like accusing them of doing drugs. they were around 12 years old and absolutely not doing anything illegal. his partner told him to leave those kids alone and that they weren't doing anything wrong and he laughed and agreed he was probably right. this guy grew up hating cops as a kid over it. later on in life he joined the military and then became a cop to take advantage of some kind of early retirement program. it wasn't some kind of noble thing for him. however, he completely fell in love with the job. now he just wants to be a cop to serve others and he isn't interested in retiring. it's really an interesting story. i respect this guy a lot, because he's very honest and a great officer.

i guess my point is there are bad people in a position of power, but i still appreciate the ones who are good. i don't let it affect how i see the others.

I knew someone whose dad was going to buy a vintage sports car. Took out cash. Got pulled over and cops took the cash and it took him well over a year to get it back.
It's really fricked up.
I get nervous flying with over $1000 cash because I always feel like it will get seized.

In the video they are saying this is consistent with drug traffickers.

Anything can be construed to be consistent with drug traffickers

Just like you'd be shocked how many vehicles without any marijuana anywhere close "smell like the odor of marijuana" at the stop, per LEO at least.

LEO lies, especially if there is incentive to lie. Stealing money with limited legal recourse is such an incentive.
