Neuty the nutria has died

Neuty, a pet nutria that became a Louisiana legend, died on Saturday, according to his keepers. In his last months, the whiskery, rat-tailed, web-footed creature was being treated for cancer. He was approximately five-and-one-half-years old, which would be the normal lifespan of a wild nutria.

According to Denny Lacoste, Neuty had apparently been handling his therapy reasonably well. On Friday evening, Lacoste said, he gave Neuty his medication, fed him and laid the amphibious creature near edge of the family’s swimming pool, which was one of his favorite spots.

But “at bedtime he just looked tired, and he didn’t talk to me as he always did,” Lacoste wrote in a statement, referring to the rodent’s characteristic chatter. “So, we gave him a Milk-Bone — his favorite treat — and kissed him goodnight,” Lacoste said.

Later, Lacoste said, he heard Neuty travel from one place to another in the house as he ordinarily did. By 11 a.m. the next day, Neuty had died peacefully while resting on his favorite rug, Denny said.
