Nola feels small, dirty, and dilapidated. The whole place is covered in grime and litter and held together with duct tape.

And that's if you can crack the job market without actually having been born and raised in NOLA. It's a very insular job market for white collar professionals, and it's hard to justify living in NOLA when Lafayette, Baton Rouge, Houston, and Mobile are close enough for an easy weekend trip.

Transferred for work and lived there for a few years. It's not a terrible place, but I'm glad I don't live there anymore. It wasn't a forever home for me. I do enjoy going back and seeing friends, though.

As Ignatius said, "New Orleans is a comfortable metropolis which has a certain apathy and stagnation which I find inoffensive," which is a better way of what I always said about New Orleans and people not giving a frick about anything there.

It's not just southerners.

Meh. On this board it's usually just baws from La that bitch about Nola. Generally it's the type that only come in and hang on Bourbon Street, drink hand grenades and hurricanes, and eat shitty tourist food.

Before covid we were hitting all time highs with tourism again and real estate in every category was doing very well.

I don't care enough to even try and defend the city anymore after watching the last 7 months unfold though. I hate Latoya more than any politician ever and have no doubt that she will get re-elected.

There's likely more upward mobility in those cities for outsiders. You should add Memphis and Birmingham to the list. Like it or not, New Orleans isn't competitive with them outside of tourism either.

It's a fantastic place to visit. It's not a great place to live.

If you aren't in the hospitality industry, New Orleans is a hard town. The New Orleans job market is barely competitive with other Louisiana cities, much less Houston or Atlanta.

its actually a terrible place in covid world. Whats the point of nola if bars are closed and no to go drinks, no live music either. And the fact your neighbors would rat your arse out for having people over.

It’s an open sewer. I’ve been twice and never plan to return. I would love to live in the rural delta area for the fishing, however.

Right, but this can be mitigated if you don't have kids. We lived in a nice 1br/1ba apartment Uptown, two blocks off of Magazine (Lakeside) and our rent was only $1200.

While true, I can't think of a time in my years living there where this affected me (obviously times are different currently with COVID).

IMO, the issue arises when you want to have kids. If you want to live in a desirable area of the city, you're looking at ~500k for a 3br/2ba home. On top of that, you're looking at ~10k per year for school. So, you've spent 500k on a home and 10k per year for school, and you have the "culture" issue of not really being safe, which is ultimately why we decided to "opt out".

As I mentioned earlier in the thread, we like the city so much that we haven't completely written it off, regardless of it's flaws.

It is a fun place to visit. Despite the recent transplants' efforts to make it generic and abandon its culture (while pretending to celebrate it), NOLA still manages to hold onto its culture here and there. Festivals are fun, if they ever start again.

Would never actually live in Orleans Parish, though. Yuck.

before the virus it was 4 X year, 3 day weekends for me. Occasionally a concert/game. For that I love NO. Growing up found the people too brash--small town upbringing--but i grew to feel differently. Would not have raised children there but wish i could have lived there in my mid 20s-30s.

Plenty of places have been open to get drinks and go hang out dude. You are correct about the no live music as that does suck.

I used to say something similar back when I lived there. The best and worst thing about New Orleans is that people don't give a frick
