NBA Basketball Player David West made a Deepwater Horizon claim for $1.5 million

Every once in a while one of these oil spill claims catches my eye. While many many people were economically harmed by the oil spill and made legitimate claims against the fund, this one stunk from the get go.
Seems that David West, who played for the (former) New Orleans Hornets, claimed to have sustained an oil spill caused loss of $1.5 million dollars, even though he was paid everything he was owed under his contract with the Hornets. The claim administrator approved $1.4 million, the BP guys appealed, and the district court in New Orleans upheld the award. However, the U.S. Fifth Circuit just recently overturned the lower court and vacated the award. See this summary.
I think the claim was bogus. What do you think?

He should’ve claimed he was an oyster fisherman, he could’ve had a new lugger...

They ought to countersue and throw him in jail
The way lawyers try to take advantage of disasters is sickening and you still have people that flooded in 2016 that can't get any assistance.
Not to mention the caps that prevented the survivors of those killed in the oil explosion that prevented them from getting the money the family deserved.

How did the claims administrator justify his claim?
Either it doesn't say how West claimed he lost wages due to the spill or I missed it.

If his financial criteria met any of the settlement benchmark templates agreed to by the BP Lawyers, he was entitled to the amount that BP VOLUNTARILY agreed to owe him.

The Tampa Bay Bucs and Lighting did as well. At least West was around.

I got 2 $2500 payments from BP when I worked at Emerils Delmonico. The GM and the chef at the time were encouraging employees to do so and adding costal fish options to the menu to make it look like we were affected, lol. I had a friend who got over $18k while waiting tables at Don’s Seafood hut.

I didn't, but then again I'm not trash. It wasn't ideal in that it fricked up my fishing but it didn't cost me any money. Been hit in two somewhat bad wrecks as well and didn't sue. I wish our state had less sue happy trash

I've done some trashy things alongside you

You don't pay for a boat or a camp. you wouldn't have a claim.

I guess you weren't injured? Good for you.

The Lightning was awarded $788,123.66 for their claim, according to court documents. The hockey team argued the Court Supervised Settlement Program incorrectly reduced its award from about $12,466,646.
The Lightning’s settlement provides an idea of how much money the Buccaneers are seeking from BP. However, it still isn’t know how much the Buccaneers are asking for and specifically why.
I wonder how much the Saints & Pelicans got?

You are correct, I was still in college at the time, but my dad who was paying for camp/boat didn't make a claim

I mean I wasn't feeling great. Both times the vehicle I was driving ended up getting totaled. Although I went fishing the day after one wreck and to a Hornets game the day after another so I couldn't justify fricking people over when I was moving around the next day

You're suing their insurance company, not them.

I didn't and I was affected. It wasn't worth the mess of paperwork and proof for me.

By far the most shocking part of this saga. What a rubber stamp they were.

He's screwing all of us over if it's frivolous.

He wasn't.
Not putting up for him but there's no telling if he was fully explained the issues at hand by his representatives.
Does it come off as greedy or foolish on his part if he wasn't entitled to any payment? Sure.
I'm pretty sure he won't lose too much sleep over how we here feel about his character.
And professional athletes are not historically as a group the most financial savvy group in the country.
