NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - Mayor Helena Moreno’s office said Friday that the National Guard will be leaving New Orleans at the end of August.

“The mayor’s office can confirm the Louisiana National Guard’s last day of operation in New Orleans is Monday, Aug. 24,” a statement from the office said.

The Guard will officially leave the city on Monday, Aug. 31.

“We are incredibly grateful to the men and women of the Louisiana National Guard as they prepare to conclude their eight-month deployment in New Orleans,” said Mayor Moreno. “While this deployment is ending, our partnership is not. The Guard has always been an integral part of major events like Mardi Gras, working alongside our public safety agencies to keep our city safe. These past eight months have only strengthened that longstanding partnership.

Let them stay at the Cook Hotel. Patrol Highland & Chimes at night.

Gotta free 'em up to be Polling Police in a few weeks. I know if I signed up recently I'd be jazzed to occupy an American city for no reason and then a few weeks later watching my neighbors cast ballots. So exciting and resourceful.

Soon the culcha folks will resurface. Their activity will resume shortly after the Guard's departure. Oh well, it was nice while it lasted.

Meanwhile, Jeffrey Landry is being a little crybaby

I want Louisiana to see this: @HelenaMorenoLA has thanked everyone for the National Guard’s presence in New Orleans—except the two people responsible for it: President @realDonaldTrump and me.

quote:

This is exactly the problem with New Orleans’ leadership. Who do they think is responsible for Troop NOLA or the National Gaurd Operation? President @realdonaldtrump and I have been committed to making our state safer—including New Orleans. But at some point, city leadership must take responsibility for public safety. That is their job! I will continue doing everything within my authority to help keep New Orleans safe, but there are clear limits to the State’s responsibility. Local leaders must step up and do their part.

I mean, not a fan of the guy either, but he's got a point. Thanking the NG for protecting the streets after she complained about them being there and even went as far as to say they didnt help prevent crime is pretty on par for New Orleans politics.

Moreno didnt want NG

I think it’s safe to say that both Landry and Helena are idiots.

She made a mistake. Now she understands how they could help.

I mean… a politician realizing their mistake is pretty rare, no?

Jeff really that caught up in his feelings? He should be taking a victory lap over SoaceX, not crying about this.

Did the National Guard members in NO actually do anything to reduce crime, or was it all just for show?

I'm open to being persuaded either way, but it's going to be hard to tell when crime rates have dropped so precipitously nationwide over the last few years.

Yeah, I'm sure they can be helpful for a city -- just like any other government workers -- but I was under the impression that all they do anywhere is walk around in nicer tourist areas and sometimes help clean trash?

They were a show of force. Basically push crime somewhere else. Bourbon has been safer but still shitty.

They pulled out of the outer neighborhoods months ago.
