The nation’s average price of gasoline has risen 38.2 cents over the last week and stands at $4.42 per gallon, according to GasBuddy® data compiled from more than 12 million individual price reports covering over 150,000 gas stations across the country. The national average is up 32.6 cents from a month ago and is $1.31 per gallon higher than a year ago. The national average price of diesel rose 21.3 cents in the last week and stands at $5.621 per gallon.

Gasoline prices rose in every state over the last week, with some of the most significant and fastest increases concentrated in the Great Lakes, where states like Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, and Illinois saw sharp spikes, while Wisconsin experienced more modest gains,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. “At the same time, diesel prices surged to new records in parts of the region, with some areas touching the $6-per-gallon mark. While refinery outages were a key driver behind those outsized increases, early signs of improvement could help ease some of the most extreme price pressures in the Great Lakes in the days ahead. Beyond the region, markets are also digesting a wave of new developments—including OPEC+ raising production for June and President Trump outlining a plan to free stranded ships—which could help restore some supply. However, with so many moving pieces, the outlook remains highly fluid, and while some localized relief may emerge, broader price volatility is likely to persist in the near term.”

The breakdown in U.S.-Iran negotiations, combined with continued restrictions on Iranian exports and heightened concerns around key shipping routes, has driven a renewed buildup in risk premiums. What began as cautious optimism around diplomacy quickly faded, replaced by growing skepticism that a near-term resolution is achievable.

That shift has propelled crude prices significantly higher, with momentum carrying into early Monday trading. WTI crude oil rose $3.39 to $105.33 per barrel, up nearly $10 from last Monday’s $95.94 level, while Brent crude climbed $3.86 to $112.03 per barrel, also advancing from $106.98 a week ago. The move underscores how quickly markets are repricing risk, particularly as concerns persist over the stability of global oil flows and the potential for further disruptions.

“For now, flows through the Strait remain restricted, further increasing the number of disrupted production volumes. Attacks on ships have also resumed, keeping upside pressure on prices,” added Giovanni Staunovo, UBS commodities strategist, via e-mail.

Refinery utilization rose 0.5 percentage points to 89.6%, while implied gasoline demand, the EIA’s proxy for retail demand, rose 49,000 bpd to 9.104 million barrels per day.

It’s ridiculous. I had to stop buying Brent and switch to regular. Give the Arabs the bomb already.

Some sources note that gas prices have stayed "effectively the same" in real terms over longer periods (~45 years), the 2009–2016 window includes a sharp spike from 2010 to 2012 (peaking at $5.22 in 2012) followed by a decline.

Numbers above are Biden inflation adjusted.

you were silent the last 1.5 years when gas was cheap under trump. That's why no one takes you seriously. Next month you will have a new talking point
