A criminal complaint filed Friday by the Maui County Department of the Prosecuting Attorney alleges that Storer intentionally or knowingly caused Dyer’s death early Wednesday at the Sands of Kahana, a beachfront condominium complex in West Maui. Prosecutors allege that Storer unlawfully entered a building at the property while armed with a “dangerous instrument”: a 5-gallon water bottle.

Maui police said surveillance footage showed a naked man approaching Dyer’s office at approximately 1:45 a.m. and assaulting him before fleeing on foot. About 90 minutes later, officers responding to reports of a nude man wandering through the nearby Kahana neighborhood found Storer unclothed and covered in abrasions, police said. He was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center for an evaluation.

Dyer was not discovered until approximately 5:35 a.m., when police responded to a report of an unresponsive security guard at the condominium complex. Medical personnel pronounced him dead at the scene. Authorities have not disclosed a possible motive.

A coworker told Hawaii News Now that Dyer had been eating during his overnight shift when he was attacked.

“He was a great person and he was just in his office having a cheeseburger on his lunch break,” Bell Hill told the outlet. “... It’s horrible.”
