A former California college swimmer was naked when he allegedly broke into a security office at a Maui condominium complex and killed a guard with a 5-gallon water bottle

A criminal complaint filed Friday by the Maui County Department of the Prosecuting Attorney alleges that Storer intentionally or knowingly caused Dyer’s death early Wednesday at the Sands of Kahana, a beachfront condominium complex in West Maui. Prosecutors allege that Storer unlawfully entered a building at the property while armed with a “dangerous instrument”: a 5-gallon water bottle.

Maui police said surveillance footage showed a naked man approaching Dyer’s office at approximately 1:45 a.m. and assaulting him before fleeing on foot. About 90 minutes later, officers responding to reports of a nude man wandering through the nearby Kahana neighborhood found Storer unclothed and covered in abrasions, police said. He was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center for an evaluation.

Dyer was not discovered until approximately 5:35 a.m., when police responded to a report of an unresponsive security guard at the condominium complex. Medical personnel pronounced him dead at the scene. Authorities have not disclosed a possible motive.

Legend Storer, 20, of Lahaina, has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder, first-degree burglary and indecent exposure in the death of Michael Dyer, 63.
Storer swam for Concordia University Irvine, a private Lutheran college, during the 2024-25 school year.

A coworker told Hawaii News Now that Dyer had been eating during his overnight shift when he was attacked.

“He was a great person and he was just in his office having a cheeseburger on his lunch break,” Bell Hill told the outlet. “... It’s horrible.”

I'm assuming much hasn't changed since the dog days and meth is the drug of choice in Hawaii still.

Boy, you don’t see that kind of murder weapon that often. Usually the closest thing is a piece of firewood.

Imagine enjoying a cheeseburger on your lunch break, and some naked guy walks in holding a water bottle over his head.

Little loose with “bottle” there? Seems like at some point just call it a five gallon jug.

His defense team will likely smear the hell out that poor man. I can see his defense claiming he was lured online by what he believed to be a female with the promise of sex then killed him when he discovered it was a man.

Yea security is a 24 hour job. He obviously had the night shift so this would be half way through his 12 hour shift. Are you dense?

How exactly do you kill a guy with a 5 gallon water jug?

I assume you walk up behind him unbeknownst to the victim and slam it on his head breaking his neck. But if the guard sees it coming, I don't understand how you can't fight back and slow momentum to a bruised toe nail at worst.
