Because part of the definition of a planet is that it orbits a star.
Not true. It is still a planet. The very definition of a "rogue planet" is a planet that does not orbit a star.

One of my daughters and I like watching Kurzgesagt videos (animated science discussions, they’re pretty great) on YouTube and they explained that the theory is that many of these get ejected from star systems gravitationally by other large objects (nearby dwarf stars for example).
In this case, this thing has an accretion disk (I’m guessing unusual unless it was recently hit by something) and is huge so not sure why’d they’d assume it’s a rogue planet and not a brown dwarf.

Could be the Decepticons planning something nefarious?

So in what manner is Bruce Willis going to save us all from this?
Armageddon style, or Fifth Element style?
Going to have to draft someone else, as poor Bruce can't even escape his own shirt these days.

A mysterious "rogue planet" has been observed gobbling 6 billion tons of gas and dust a second — an unprecedented rate that blurs the line between planets and stars, astronomers said Thursday.
Unlike Earth and other planets in our solar system, which orbit the sun, rogue planets float freely through the universe untethered to a star.
Takes a lot of raw material to be able to accomplish this:
quote:
And the twelve gates were twelve pearls; every several gate was of one pearl: and the street of the city was pure gold, as it were transparent glass.
And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it

It helps to know what you are talking about.
Also, haven’t you heard you should never use the word in the definition of the word.
The guy acted confused why would a scientist call it “not a proper planet.”
I answered.

Shame what has happened to that man, and at his age no less. Life sure can throw us some serious knuckle balls.
No shite. Why couldn’t a real Hollywood POS like Harvey Weinstein been handed that card?
