I am a 53 year old male with 3 previous knee surgeries that did not work. I tried the gel shots without any success. In the last year I lost 40 lbs to see if that would help and it didn’t. I had a full knee replacement on February 11 and regret the decision. My other knee needs replacing and I will not do it unless I am unable to walk I am still walking with a cane, my leg will not straighten all the way out ( which I understand is not unusual and takes time to correct) and the swelling is still fairly significant. I feel my progress is being inhibited by the swelling.

I haven’t talked to many that did not say it was the best decision they ever made. For me, it just was not worth. It doesn’t matter how good it feels after surgery and recovery, to me it is not worth it.

Wife (no pics) had both knees replaced. Now pain free. Only downside is she can’t kneel down in church. Other than that, very pleased with decision. Took about 9 months for each knee to completely heal.

Sorry about your pain, but almost to a man people I've asked said it was worth it. The rehab is a bitch but the constant pain of bone on bone is over.

Something else... I listen to a show which has a weekly segment with a doctor. He said within 5 years they'll be able to regrow cartiledge in your knee to make it like new. His words, not embellished. He said if you can possibly hold off the science is coming fast.

You’re barely a month out from a massive joint surgery with a long rehab. That’s way too premature to make a verdict.

See how you feel at the 6 month and 1 year mark.

Father had both knees replaced. One 20 years ago and one 5 years ago. The 20year one has been excellent. The 5 year has never been right and now they say it was a defective knee and it will need to be redone.

Gotta admit, that was pretty good.

53 is very young to have a knee replacement and those younger patients tend to struggle with pain post op typical due to being more active and “over doing “ their therapy, also in my experience patients with prior surgery have more scar tissue and bleeding during surgery hence the significant swelling.

That being said you are only 6-8 weeks removed from this life changing decision. I would give it some time (minimum 4-5 months)

Also I assist in joint replacement 500 a year for last 13 years as a PA (I would never have a joint replacement unless absolutely last resort)

Good luck

Make sure you do your PT and put in the work.

Many folks don't and the surgery is a waste of time.

Not saying that is you, but happens too often.

You might need a knee manipulation to help break up the scar tissue that’s likely formed. I do anesthesia for many total joints and it happens from time to time, for many reasons, where a knee manipulation is required. It’s a quick procedure where you’re put to sleep briefly and the surgeon bends the knee and straightens it, freeing up the scar tissue.

I'm in my 70's going to have my knee replacement in 2 months. Had my hip replaced, same leg, last year and that turned out good. Had the gel shots also, didn't do a thing. To top it off on the same leg I have a bone spur on my achilles tendon. When that flares up, it's over for me. No walking til it subsides.

My daughter is a physical therapist, she will do the therapy. She's already told me don't waste her time if I'm not serious. And make sure I take my meds before she starts.

Being able to do something and having it widely available for the general public are two very different things.

I had a spinal fusion that was a son of a bitch recovery. After about 1 year things started improving a lot. I felt great for the last 10 years after the rehab. No more nerve pain. I regretted my decision for the first 6 months after my surgery.

My mom's had both her knees replaced. Recovery was at least a year, but she's in her 70s.

This….I’m 49 and had my left knee replaced on February 3, 2025. I too regretted it for the first month or so. It was terrible and the pain was constant. I had no strength and the ROM was not what I’d hoped .
I stuck with the PT and it started coming around. I’m 13 months out now and have zero pain. I do whatever I want and can get around better than ever.
I hope you have the same experience in the near future.

make sure you are doing your rehab as that will make the difference in healing.
