Let me add that we had one car (a 1960’s Volkswagen Beatle), rarely used the AC, and rarely ate at a restaurant, etc. The definition of comfortable was different.

Your Mom was also able to stay home to cook all day, clean the house, etc. All of the things that most couples have to do after their 40 hour weeks because it's not easy to swing a one income home in most situations today. Only about 25-30% of families with children are a one income household today.

And with two working adults, you typically need two automobiles.

I didn’t own a home but my creature comforts were similar to what I had growing up. I had a car, lived in a safe neighborhood, could pay my bills, had cable tv, etc. Today’s creature comforts would include a much larger list

would it really?

TVs and appliances are all much cheaper than they were in 70s

Even cord phone was a relatively big ticket purchase

n 1970, mobile phones didn't exist for the general public. Instead, consumers paid a monthly rental fee for corded landline phones directly to the telephone company. Purchasing a standard landline phone outright typically ranged from \(\$15\) to \(\$50\), which is equivalent to about \(\$130\) to \(\$430\) when adjusted for inflation

Which isn’t really what “die with zero” is about.

It’s much more about spending and giving your money to your would be heirs when you’re alive and can enjoy it together.

As we see in the other thread, a lot of the older folk think that is blasphemous.

One Forbes article is not research. Magazines articles are clickbait these days.

Uninformed.

You should actually look into the “great wealth transfer”.

It is played up by the media so you boomers can pat yourselves on the back.

Only ~22% of boomers plan to leave any money to their children.

Forbes wrote an article last year with this exact title:

Baby Boomers Embrace 'Die With Zero,' Passing On Less Money To Their Kids
And even for those who "plan" on it, half will be eaten up with long term care.

He's talking about the part that he quoted where the poster's parents got married right out of high school and the Dad was able to obtain a job without a college degree that provided a living wage and the ability to save money while raising a family.

The drive to put everyone through college as a baseline has definitely messed things up.

the fact that the overwhelming majority would rather watch their grandchildren be strapped with funding the broken social security program than agree to shut the program down tomorrow, tells me everything I need to know about Boomers as a collective.

You didn’t read my post. The things the OP are complaining about were set in motion long before these people. You can start with LBJ and take it from there.

This right here.

All it takes is a little Alzheimers, cancer, or dementia and that memory care facility will take it all.

One Forbes article is not research.
It was based on a Northwest Mutual survey.

It wasn’t just an “article” pulled out of their arse.

Exact same info was seen with the Federal Reserve’s survey and the CFA Institute.

Adapt and overcome. I've never seen people waste so much time bitching about another group of people. With all of this angst and effort, you can do something productive. But instead, you lump in everyone into a group and blame them for the reason you can't succeed.

I don't disagree.

The railroad job that my Dad had right out of high school for 40+ years that provides him a pension where he receives about $5k a month (after insurance/healthcare) now requires a four-year degree, out of pocket training, significantly higher dues/fees, and they're attempting to phase out the pension.

Not true for me. I have one kid on the spectrum so all three will get a nice inheritance. My brother will probably spend most of his but his millennial daughter is already richer than he ever was.

Okay fine.

You had 30 years to put a stop to it.

LBJ died in 1973.

It's a fricking message board. Bold to assume no one in this thread complaining is successful.

Maybe the generation of personal responsibility should take some responsibility.

I bet you that 95% of the people in this post criticizing the boomers are liberals/progressives. It has become classic liberal dogma to criticize the boomers and the funny thing is that even comes from old liberals who are themselves boomers.

That does complicate things for the younger set, I agree... one thing though to consider is that the younger set is working with the same challenges among each other... same can be said for the older set in their day.

My thoughts on why there are so few single earner households is that it's not seen as "normal". My daughter and son in law both grew up in single earner homes, so it wasn't strange or scary for them to do the same.
