What are the overall stats for retirement savings now?
I think it is fairly consistent across all age groups that about 50% have jack shite saved.
Generally speaking, 50% of the population is rather stupid from a financial standpoint (and many other standpoints, of course). That's not exactly a news flash.
The 50% "boomer" portion creates a bigger overall hit by virtue of their overall numbers. It's not really that boomers as a whole are somehow more inherently stupid financially than any other generation.
I find the generational arguments tiresome and boring for the most part, though. I was born early 70s.

And then in 25 years everyone will look back at your generation and not understand how you all allowed trillions to be stolen. Every generation shits on the previous. It's just now the younger generations are soft as baby shite and have an outlet like the Internet to bitch about it.
What an incredible boomer take. “It’s your fault I stole from you, you little bitch!”

Thanks! I appreciate that. Each generation has their strengths and weaknesses along with idiots. This is not a black and white thing. I don’t see what I doing as anything other than what I should do with my time and money.
I ran the rat race for over 30 years and probably would still be in it if not for the Big C. I definitely have changed some priorities as a result.

No. I joined the military and they covered it. Not given a dime for school.

Did they put food on the table, roof over your head, etc.? Are you a productive member of society? If so, you Momma and Daddy did their job at least in terms of providing for you.
Yes and I'm thankful for that. That's a different point than the one I'm making. They truly have zero idea how the world operates today. Job/interview wise, costs of things.

I admit I am pretty sheltered. I worked in a field and industry where pretty much everyone was fiscally conservative and placed a high importance on investing. Most people I know outside of work had the same attitude. My parents and those of people I am surrounded by were hard working and savers. Those I am around on a daily basis can say the same thing. I don’t know what the solution is for the 50% that didn’t or were incapable of saving enough. If SS was done away with, what about those boomers that don’t have savings? Just cut them off?
For those that saved and paid maximum SS taxes, cancelling their benefits would be like telling the Cuban exiles in Miami that we are going to start normal relations and supporting the Cuban government financially and they have to just get over the communists forcibly taking their property years ago for the good of today’s population. Right or wrong, that would be a hard pill for them to swallow.

Scruffy sounds like my dad in 1995 telling me you don't invest in the stock market when it's at an all time high.
quote:There was 2008, which was propped up by government fiscal policy, kicking the can down the road.
They have predicting a collapse since then.
The US debt to GDP ratio has topped 100% for the first time since WW2, the dollar’s value is down over 50% since 1995, US consumer debt is at ~$19 trillion, etc.
That doesn’t even touch on the issues around the globe.
Diversify as best you can and ride the wave until the wheels fall off.

I guess I run in different circles.
Is this what the kids are mad about, the parents didn't save enough to pay for their kids lives? Is that what the resentment is about? I never dreamed of expecting my parents to pay for my life. It's why most of us were on our own at 18.

How do they not know how much things cost?
We paid for daycare off and on from 1991 until 2005. It was very expensive and eventually we were able to get by on one salary instead of two. My wife also went back to work after our youngest started school as well to help build up the nest egg.
Your parents probably understand more than you are giving them credit for.
So what part of your life that is not going well do you blame on your parents?

Find someone else to be mad at. Perhaps discuss your issues with a therapist or your parents.

My parents were wonderful. Absolute support throughout my younger years financially and emotionally. Excellent advice as I’ve aged otherwise.
I love them dearly and would die for them as they would for me.
Those same parents, whom I love and respect so much, are equally as jaded by what the majority of their generation has become. It’s absolutely incredible that the boomer and early gen x crew can’t see that

Who are these people stealing from their kids and grandchildren that you so easily spreak of? Don’t give general examples. What are You doing to ensure that your kids and grandchildren are taken care of?
You sound irrationally angry about this topic. Did your parents not treat you well, seriously?
