My 6yo daughter went through this about 6 months ago. Had to basically have an anemia to fix it. Hospital stay for about 3 days, but she was feeling much better within hours of waking up. Was back to her normal self after about another day - eating and drinking normally, etc. Prayers to you and your family - just trust that the doctors know what they are doing and your little one will be just fine in no time at all.

Best wishes to your little man.
Like Scruffy said, this is a fairly common thing. I've cared for many children that had an intussusception. Some were able to be reduced without surgery, some needed the surgery.
I will say this....kids bounce back so much quicker than adults imo. After surgery let your nurse know when he's in need of pain meds. We know the parents know their child better than anyone else on the planet and we value and respect when they tell us their child is in pain. Also, expect that they will go pretty slowly with his diet after surgery. So just go with the flow regarding diet, the doctors will advance his diet as soon as they feel his little tummy can handle it.
Oh....and don't give him anything red after surgery(no red jello, etc). Sometimes those items still find their way on the patient's trays. So just toss them or eat them yourself and ask your nurse for a different color. We don't want them eating red stuff because if they throw up or start pooping...we don't know if that red is from the red jello....or something else is going on.
If you need stuff to keep him busy to distract him....talk to your nurse and ask for child life. They can bring in toys or crayons/coloring books or come visit him and do fun stuff with him in his room. Many pediatric units have video game consoles and dvd players in each room for the kids to play games and watch movies. Don't be afraid to ask your nurse for stuff for him to do.

Welp, guess the prayers worked. No surgery because the intussuception is gone! Gonna try and give him some food to see how his tummy handles it, and then will probably send us home if he is fine after eating.

Yay that is awesome!
How did he handle the iv? I've seen many parents promise their child a special prize once they got home for being so brave in the hospital.
Course...the kids where I used to work at would rack up toys there. A toy when you were in the ED, a toy and blanket when you got to your room on the floor, a toy if you had to get an iv, a teddy bear wearing his own surgical cap after surgery. That was always a fun part of the job....giving them toys for being so brave.

Gratz!!
Like nurse advised: Stay away from anything red for a few days so IF anything is still lingering it will be readily apparent.
As you just learned, anything can and will happen just kinda randomly with kids. Thankfully a lot of stuff does randomly fix itself too though.
Fasten your seatbelts, you're only 22 months into a lifetime roller coaster ride

Like Nurse said, avoid red foods for the next few days to week.
Otherwise, I'm glad this turned out ok.
