My son is about to have emergency surgery for intussusception. Update on page 2!

Took him the local ER this morning because of major stomach pain, and now in an ambulance headed to Hershey Medical Center to have the surgery. Happened in the middle of the night, never seen him have anything close to this much pain. His stomach is all scratched up from him grabbing at it because of the pain. Almost acted like he was trying to rip his stomach out because it was hurting him so bad.
Has anyone else dealt with this? Just wondering if I should expect something the doctors haven't told us. Is the surgery fairly invasive, how long was the recovery time...etc.
And if y'all don't mind, pray for the little guy. He is only 22 months old, and is the kinda boy every dad would want to have. I know it's dad talking, but he is active, curious, an adventurer, loving, sweet, and smart as a whip. Not gonna be fun to try and keep him from playing while recovering from this.

My oldest son had intussusception when he was 5. Luckily for us surgery was not required, he received intravenous meds and it subsided(released and back into normal position). But we did spend 3 nights in the hospital. He was miserable and it was tough to deal with as a parent.
The good thing is he has not had any issues since, he's 9 now.

You can reduce it without surgery, but that isn't always the case. As far as surgery itself, it depends on what is seen during the procedure.
I wish I had a better answer for you, but it all just depends on if there is any intestinal damage. They may not have to do anything overly invasive, but I cannot say for sure.
Wishing the best for your kiddo and hope that it isn't anything problematic.
Had he started having bloody stool yet?

Happens a lot.
While this is all new to you and spouse, remember this is just another day at the office for the medical pro's dealing with your child.
Be strong for your child as that little ball of perception is looking at your reactions.
You will be fully informed. Recoveries depend on exactly what happens to your individual child during the procedure and the damage done by the digestive system to itself.
I was involved with an emergency weekend procedure on a German tourist couple a few years ago. That little boy, about the same age as yours, watched the monitor display of his intestines as the radiography was going on. The lil fella watched as intently as the Dr. did!! We tried a few things in radiography and had the on-call ped surgeon on his way when the "one last check before he goes under for surgery" showed it fixed itself.
The great thing about the tiny ones, they are so fast growing they bounce back so well most of the time.
Good luck!!!

Prayers for your son, brother.
Hershey has a good reputation, so I expect he'll be in good hands.
Not my specialty, but I spent months on pediatric surgery throughout my training.
Like Scruffy said, it all depends on what they find. The intussusception is kind of like a hernia into itself, with the bowel telescoping over itself, if that makes sense.
Sometimes it's a simple as reducing (undoing/untelescoping) the intussusception. But usually if surgery is needed, there's a "lead point" that causes the abnormal folding of the intestines, and that has to be removed.
Hopefully, they get him into the OR before the involved bowel strangulates and dies. If that happens, the involved segment has to be removed, and the recovery will be weeks rather than 1 week.

Not yet, hasn't even had a stool since this started. Only had gas once.

Gotcha. That is a little good news. It isn't definitive proof that nothing is wrong, but it is a positive sign.
Wishing the best.

Your little man will feel so much better after the doctors take care of his problem.
You're a good dad for paying attention to his symptoms.
