It's partly a credit to you and your wife that they want to be around their parents.

Some families I know their kids moved out as soon as they could and almost never go home to see their parents.

So....congrats!

Apartments are crazy expensive if you want something decent in a nice area. And starting pay at many jobs is low. It makes living on your own straight out of college difficult for many.

Not sure why kids get such a bad rep nowadays, like I said I'm well into my 30s. I have 2 teenagers and pretty much them and most of their friends all work even during the school year. I don't know any of them that are spoiled and coddled. And yes, every one of them play outside, as do my youngest 2 and their friends.

I moved home in my 20s the summer between transferring schools and it was fricking miserable.

I was told that when you are 18 and out of high school that you were only to visit and no longer to fully reside at home.. my parents provided for me so I had no issue with that policy and originally thought that would be the way I'd treat my own children.. I have since softened on that philosophy and feel that not burdening my children and myself with unwanted debt is more important .. situationally I can see my children moving back in at different stages of their life...

I didn't do it but looking back it would not have been a bad idea. I wanted my freedom and to live elsewhere, I am glad I did.

A few years later when I wanted to stop renting and purchase a house, the thousands I could have saved by staying there just a year would have been helpful

ETA: cheap rent in NOLA will run you about $700/month (excluding electric, water, internet, groceries). That's $8400 a year at a minimum.

It can be the the smart thing to do.

My daughter lived at home, and my SIL lived with his parents, between college and marriage (2 yrs). They were able to buy their own home a month before the wedding.

With real estate so high, it's hard for young folks to save for a downpayment while they pay for a decent rental.

Exactly. I give broke some credit here. This board is usually filled with people saying you're a loser if you're not self-sustaining fresh out of college. Why even have kids if you're going to run them out as soon as you can? A few extra years for them to pile up some cash to buy a place is OK. I agree you may be enabling them a bit and that millennials are probably stunted in some ways, but this is not a big deal for now.

Having multiple generations in one house is probably how the world worked until the last 50 years or so. American suburbia is a bit odd that way if you think about it.

I was out of the house from 18 to 28. I just moved back in with my folks and am paying them 400 a month in rent plus utilities. I went back to school and do not know where I will be going once I graduate so i did not buy a house. I'm basically paying to keep my shite stored there...i stay there 3 nights a week tops. I'm hunting every weekend and couch surf a few nights a week in baton rouge. I'm stacking cash up son

Pardon the derail...but your opinion on vintage Sicura chronographs? why so cheap on the bay?

Was there THAT big a quality difference before 1979 and the Breitling purchase?

I moved home for about 6 months after college, and while I love my parents, and we get along, I just about went nuts. Got out of there fast after I completed the job I was doing.

saving up for a down payment, and i really dont want a starter house. i pay $1300 in rent which is absurd. really considering a roommate to speed up the process. living by yourself is so awesome tho

Nope. Kids aren't willing to take a cut in lifestyle to be more independent

This is generally what my friends did 30 years ago when they were single.
