I saw an old dude piss away 40 grand. Cash withdrawals at the bank and depositing into Bitcoin ATMs. He thought the people in the phone were police and he was clearing up a warrant and fine he was unaware of. His family and the actual police found him at a bitcoin ATM with another 10k in cash he was getting ready to deposit.

I never thought I’d fall for a telephone scam (and I ultimately didn’t)…but the one where the sheriff’s office calls and the guy sounds like a guy from Baton Rouge would sound…telling me I missed some mysterious court date and the judge issued a warrant for my arrest. Talk about got me worked up. I thought it was totally legit until he started talking about paying fines over the phone. Hung up and called the Sheriff’s office…sure enough, there’s no officer so n so on the force.

Several yrs ago I came close to falling for this shite but I woke up & just hung up. Went to Chase to let them know what was going on & the branch manager told me they have been getting 4-5-6 such scam attempts a week, going on 2-3 past few yrs. According to the bank mgr a solid "tell" is when they want to the person to an out-of-the way ATM machine for the money to be deposited. You're in the bank where you got the money in the first place, why not simply deposit back there?

That is a tell-tale sign….no good can come of fricking with bitcoin (or any other crypto). Trouble is, using AI they can sound like one of your relatives with ease.
Bottom line is, if someone on the phone (or via text) is pressuring you to pay anything immediately, it is probably some frickhead in Bangladesh.
There is NOTHING that you need to pay so badly that you can’t check it out first.

I had one call me a couple of weeks ago pretending to be my son claiming he was in a wreck. Unfortunately, he quickly realized the gig was up before I could frick with him.

The itunes one gets a lot of people since so many people use it for purchases. They got my mom last year for a few hundred. The worst part was seeing how embarrassed she was. I would like to track down the whore jeet that did it and do very, very bad and painful things to them

He called me right after, mainly to find out if an iPadPro was a "good computer." It took 15-20mins to finally convince him he'd been scammed and he should call his CC company. In that time the perps rang up around $1000 in charges
Scammers probably bought an iPad Pro.

I got rid of my landline when ATT and Verizon put cell towers fairly close to my house.I live way out in the country and cell service was spotty.
Some of the calls I got were doozies.
One was from someone claiming to be from the IRS,caller I D came up IRS.The scammer claimed my tax return was incorrect and I owed $1000,I could pay with a credit card and I would not be arrested for income tax evasion.Otherwise ,armed IRS agents would come to my house and arrest me and I would go to prison plus pay a big fine.
I told them to eat shite, send the motherfrickers,I’ve got an AR 15 and plenty of bullets,we’ll have a good old fashioned shoot out.
I was babysitting my grandson a lot when he was 3-4 y.o.,when scammers called I would hand him the phone and he would jabber at them. That was kinda fun sitting there imagining the cussing I was getting.
I was glad to get rid of the land line when I was able to.

My dad started a crypto wallet with $10k with my now deceased brother. Built it up to $500k.
Got scammed by someone claiming to be with whatever app he was using. $500k gone in moments.
The money sucks, but for my dad having built that up after my brother’s passing to give to his grandson and granddaughter …. Ooooofff.
I still feel terrible and complacent because I was with him when he was taking calls via WhatsApp. Sadly, my dad is a I Know Everything type and was prime for the scam.

Same one almost got my mother. She was so worked up she left my step father in the driveway trying to go to the bank. They wanted her to withdraw money and meet her somewhere. That part is what really worried me. Afterwards, she wanted to think she was fricking Batman and could have nabbed the guy and lost my shite on her.

We traced the phone number back to a warehouse in Miami
They spoof those phone numbers….it was probably somebody deep in china or Russia.
A while back I had a scammer call and it said in the caller ID that he was calling from MY number!

My parents get the scam calls all day, every day. I have tried to tell them at least a million times to quit answering the damned phone if its a city/state in the caller id but they're convinced that their doctors won't leave messages to call them back. its so infuriating - literally a phone call every five minutes for twelve hours a day.
Then there's my dad who clicks on every link he sees on facebook and there's nothing I can do to convince him to stop. He burns up a computer every few months from malware and viruses, but he's convinced he's not doing anything wrong.

The good news is that the $500K may have been smoke, or course the $10K was real money. I have seen people who on paper have fortunes, but when they try to put it in real dollars, it evaporates.
I have had many clients with bad experiences, the ones involving crypto seem to be the worse. I have been fairly successful at tracking down the money and recovering most of it. The secret to it is to get help IMMEDIATELY. Close relative got scammed out of $800, I had lunch with him that day and he told me about this weird thing that happened.
I cancelled lunch, sent him to his bank, I went to his PC, I got every penny back. The worst was a guy who is a very wealthy, he called me one day because he notices irregularities in his crypto accounts. I went to his office and started digging, he was out about $175K. The bad part was this money had been missing for months, all track were covered and gone. The FBI nor state police or anyone could help. All I could do was file reports and pray.
If you see or hear of a scam victim, take action immediately, especially with crypto, once the trail is cold, it is rare that recovery is possible.

I intercepted a call my mom took that she believed was legit. Giving these people an opportunity to speak to her is a weak spot, but I got involved in the call and said I’m the one you’re talking to now. Rajiv got pretty mad demanding I put her on the phone. Nope, not happening. After failing to get her back on phone he called me an a-hole and hung up

I got one yesterday confirming my order from Springfield Armory.
It was fairly convincing until you paid attention to the fine print address it was coming from was Kansas City, FL and the zip code was from Manhattan, New York.
That and you can't order firearms direct from Springfield armory.

My wife fell for one that cost us 2500 about 6 months ago.

We told my mom there is nothing that needs to be paid right away if it comes over email, phone call or in person. Unless it’s a family member or friend and even then I explained how the AI voice scams work and how to verify. She’s had to cancel quite a few credit cards but she’s good about forwarding me emails or calling me now. And some are quite tricky. Most everything is autopay and if your iCloud gets turned off it’s not the end of the GD world.
