Are we missing some steps here?

Maybe just a few.

My aunt and grandmother almost fell for one years ago. They called my aunt and said I was in jail for a DWI and needed $500 to bond myself out. And she got off the phone and immediately went to the bank and withdrew the money. She was almost to the next step in the process when she called one of her sons and told him and he called me, who was sitting in my office just fine.

I told her a) I don’t even drink, b) I appreciated her dropping everything to get me out of jail, and c) next time to simply pick up the phone and call or text me. She was embarrassed and felt bad but the older people get the easier it is to fool them with just the slightest information (i.e. the name of one of her nephews).

My mom who is only 72, still in very good cognitive shape, and typically adept at avoiding scams nearly fell for one where someone pretending to be an Amazon employee said there were unauthorized charges on her account. She just Googled Amazon customer support phone number and found a fake one to call, which was insanely stupid. Some federal fraud official who really exists was supposed to have a call with her the next day, obviously it wasn’t really him.

Sorry but those two statements do not compute.

801 and 808 area codes are the highest in scams as people think it is an 800 number.

Scams targeting elderly are a never ending activity. We see about 2-3 a month, and are very carful about never doing a purchase we did not initiate, or react to the threat of a police summons or call that a child is hurt. The current most difficult to head off is doing a simple purchase over the internet based on the "trial offer". Once they have your credit card access it can take 5-6 months to stop them sending refills for there misrepresented crap product. You waste your time and additional billing by trying to shut down the reorders. Just work with your card issuer to shut it down. Others will try selling the new, magical drugs for 300 bucks that cost 6 dollars through your pharmacy/insurance.

A whole lot more folks fall for scams than they let on. For the amount of attempts, I believe some folks have to be making some serious money.
