I’d vote no on any shotgun for her.

My wife's firearm by her side of the bed is a short barrel 12 gauge loaded with Federal Flight Control #1 buck. Her carry firearm is a S&W .380 Bodyguard 2.0.

You mean the thought of her making an "unplanned donation" is repugnant to her? But, as long as it's someone else, it's okay? I see you did a bangup job of parenting, scooter.

Typical liberal. All touchy feely until the wolf is at their door.
Smith and Wesson 442 38 snub nose revolver with no lock. Use subsonic hollow point rounds so it doesn’t kick as bad.
With a female you want simple and reliable. Point and click. No laser BS. Aim center mass like pointing a finger at someone.
Find a gun range that has one for rent. Let her try it out before purchase. You want HER to be comfortable with it and it is HER gun. This gets her invested in the weapon so she feels more comfortable handling it.
.380 if the 38 is still too much.
And practice.

A good tactical shotgun is great for home protection. Look at the Mossberg 500 series

Based on OP's description, I'm assuming no one wants to see pics

semi-automatic youth model 20 gauge shotgun.
This is what sits on side of my bed. The size makes it much more practical than my 12ga’s for home defense.

Slug in the chamber. Followed by 2- 3” #2’s. It would be a very very bad day if you got hit with a 3” #2 inside of 30ft.
No children in my home for anyone with an opinion about leaving loaded firearms out…

Tell her to find a real man who will steer her straight.

My TTPs for my household are that I engage the threat(s) with my weapons throughout the house, while my wife heads to the master bath with the shotgun loaded with #1 buckshot. She needs to be in a safe location away from any stray bullets while I do the clearing.

It’s honestly what I would do. Shotgun, pistol, AR.
Fire arms are expensive. I probably wouldn’t just give them to her as a liberal though she may get a crazy hair and try and chop them up or something so maybe put them in a trust with myself her husband and maybe her brother with stipulations that none of the firearms can be sold or destroyed without 100% agreement with all parties.
