What astounds me more is people willing to pay $2 million for a baseball card. Talk about having money to waste
This is what it always wonder. Even with 10k or 50k cards, who is the guy at the end of the rainbow that buys it and just keeps it? Obviously the first few buyers are trying to flip the cards and make money, but where do these cards end up? Just sitting in a safe for decades? There’s no way 99% of these cards will retain that value when new “rare” cards are printed every year. I get the increase in value for vintage cards but new cards seem like fools gold. Like this ohtani card- very cool card, 1 of 1 , etc. but wont there be another 1/1 printed that’s even better, and then another? Then eventually there are 5000 different 1/1 ohtanis they can’t all be the best one that demands top dollar. And how is game worn little jersey patch worth so much more that a full game worn jersey? Doesn’t make sense to me. I think it’s a bubble like the junk wax of the90s but with much bigger money required to get in and much more to lose. And I say this as a long time collector. But I collect for fun, not as an investor.

His buddy would get bent over tax wise. If he sells in the same year, it would be ordinary income. 2m minus $300 basis. 37% tax bracket. State income taxes. Let's just say his buddy would pay 800k so oweo can buy his candy with his snap card

Man, baseball players today are lazy with their signatures.

Great situation to be in! Here's what you need to know from a tax perspective — though I'd strongly recommend consulting a tax professional for your specific situation, as I'm not a tax advisor.
The core issue: Capital Gains Tax
When you sell a collectible like a baseball card, the IRS treats it as a capital asset. Your gain would be:
$2,000,000 - $300 (cost basis) = $1,999,700 taxable gain
Short-term vs. Long-term
The rate you pay depends on how long you've held the card:
Less than 1 year held ? taxed as ordinary income (your regular federal tax bracket, up to 37%)
More than 1 year held ? taxed as a long-term capital gain, BUT collectibles have a special rule
The Collectibles Rule (Important!)
Unlike stocks, which are taxed at a maximum 15–20% long-term capital gains rate, the IRS classifies baseball cards as collectibles under IRC §408(m). Long-term gains on collectibles are taxed at a maximum federal rate of 28% — higher than the normal long-term capital gains rate.
Estimated federal tax (if held > 1 year):
~$1,999,700 × 28% = ~$559,916 in federal tax
Other taxes to consider
Louisiana state income tax — Louisiana taxes capital gains as ordinary income. The top state rate is around 4.25%, adding roughly ~$85,000 more.
Net Investment Income Tax (NIIT) — If your income exceeds certain thresholds ($200K single / $250K married), an additional 3.8% surtax may apply, adding another ~$76,000.
All combined, you could owe $700K+ in taxes depending on your full income picture.
Ways to potentially reduce your tax burden (talk to a pro about these)
Installment sale — Spread payments over multiple years to potentially stay in lower brackets
Charitable donation — Donating the card to a qualified nonprofit could give you a deduction for fair market value
Opportunity Zone investment — Reinvesting gains into a Qualified Opportunity Zone fund can defer/reduce taxes
1031 exchange — Generally doesn't apply to collectibles, unfortunately
Bottom line: This is a life-changing windfall, but also a complex tax event. A CPA or tax attorney who specializes in high-value asset sales is well worth the fee here.

Based on some others I have seen, he should take that offer and run. I have not seen any worth in the millions.

quote:What if he bought the box of cards with cash and payment is remitted to a Bahamian shell company that is wholly owned by another Bahamian shell company which is a direct subsidiary of another Bahamian shell company and the transaction is processed thru a Swiss intermediary bank that intends to swiftly wire the funds to another Swiss financial institution?
His buddy would get bent over tax wise

i would bet he will get anywhere from 50k-75k for that card if he were to sell it at market value today. no idea where 2 mill is coming from, obviously i'd take it though.

Then he better take it immediately. Two words...Wander Franco. You never know until it happens.

I won a signed Blake Bortels football at a charity auction and was offered $1000 for it the next day. Of course I turned it down.
It might have dropped some in value but I am playing the LONG game and feel like it is just a matter of time before this thing goes 10x!!
So much comedy and sarcasm in this post, I have to upvote.
I truly believe everything in this post.

Awesome pull for him!
It is especially impressive considering how fricky Topps is these days with funneling most legitimately good shite to "influencers" and such.
ETA: Assuming this is a real post.
