You will not believe what changed in the 10 years since you last hired an assistant. Holy hell are you in for a surprise. Get creative and retain her or prepare thy anus.

This. If I can give you any advice, hire the most unattractive person you find that is mildly qualified.

I am training some of my people for their next job.

Others, I will do whatever in my power to keep.

That's, um, management.

So you underpaid her by 14% for how many years? Consider it a deal you had her as long as you did.

I have a 50-50-50 rule for secretaries/inside office workers.

At least 50 years old, 50 pounds overweight, and @ 50” tall.

These tend to be hard, appreciative workers, and usually eat lunch at their desks.

Zero chance of sexual harassment.

14% raise

About 10 or so years ago, our administrative assistant was making $12/hr and had been with the company for about 4-5 years. She did a ton of work but wasn't much to look at . She asked for $15 and the owner said best he could do was $13 so she left.

A month later, he hires an eye candy assistant for $16/hr. She probably did a 1/4 of the work the other assistant did.

If she a good assistant you match the 14%. Good help is hard to find. Plus you will wind up breaking in a new assistant, which will probably cost you more money.

Basically if we raise one person that much, we have to raise them all. They talk.

They do talk. And now they are talking about you letting her walk over 14%. And now that are all talking about how you guys don’t value them and they have no future pay growth to look forward to. Double edged sword. You should have countered with something and made her turn it down to save face for the remaining employees that talk.

Not with today's inflation. Wage inflation is a small combustible engine. Only 14% is cheap right now. It is only going to get hotter and stronger.

More the reason she should have left.

As a business owner, you should understand better than everyone that it’s always about the dollar bills y’all. You should be happy for her and not act so negative about loyalty.

Uhhhh.... what?! Entitled much? She gave you 10 years, and you cannot match. 14% raise now, can lead to a greater on later on. You suck.

More money at another firm. Not dramatic life changing money. Basically a 14% raise. I could probably come up with something to offer her, but I can't match it.

From this, I would guess it's not all about the money for her.

In the current market talent is scarce and headhunting is worse than I've ever seen it. I went and checked all of my employees salaries last year to make sure they were at or above market value. I gave out many raises and still lost several long-term personnel. The money being thrown around is just insane.

If you're idea of a "relationship" is intentionally paying her less than market value, then that's an unhealthy one.

It's work; if she's not capitalizing on her market value, then she's a fool. Which it appears she is clearly not.

Your next assistant won't be there for nearly as long.
