High school baseball coach, wife electrocuted while installing new scoreboard

quote:

A Florida high school baseball coach and his wife were electrocuted while installing a new scoreboard at a baseball field to replace one that had been destroyed by Hurricane Michael, officials said.

quote:

“Coach Crum was operating a boom lift, and unloading a piece of equipment from a trailer when the boom of the lift made contact with overhead powerlines,” White said in a press release. “This electrified the boom lift electrocuting Coach Crum.”

The wife doubled down

quote:

“The coach’s wife attempted to aid him, and was also electrocuted.

The son tripled down

quote:

Their son also attempted to help the two, and he was electrocuted and injured.

Edit:

PSA: Folks know your limitations. Saving a few dollars for a good cause isn't worth risking your life or your family members. Teach your kids about the danger of downed electrical lines. I kinda assumed folks know you don't touch an engerized object. This is important around car accidents and after big storms with down power lines.

dont try to touch someone that has direct contact to electrocution. get a board of some kind and whack them with it so they let go or break contact. otherwise the current will pass to you

The definition of electrocution is to injure or kill by electric shock. So he was electrocuted.

Pretty shitey to be making florida jokes on this one man, have some fricking class. It was a baseball coach trying to do something good for his players, and now his son lost both parents. I hope your kids lose both parents to a tragedy, Ill make sure to start a thread mocking his moronic parents.

We learned how to help someone being shocked by power lines in Cub Scouts. Maybe allowing girls in boy scouts is not such a bad idea.

Their resistance to using a pro kinda makes you wonder if that coach had the capacitor to make good decisions.

That’s a terrible fricking story. New head Ball coach out on a Sunday with his wife trying to fix the scoreboard. Damn

Commonly takes place...you have to give yourself plenty of clearance between equipment and overhead lines. Electricity doesn't play around.

Really terrible. Just trying to help out and they get killed.
Power lines certainly are to be taken seriously, however he obviously just didn't see them. I wonder if the lines were installed too low per code, were temporary ( since they were rebuilding from hurricane), the lift jerk suddenly up and touch the lines, or he just flat out didn't see the lines.

ETA: looking at Google Street view and maps, it looks like there are some power lines running along side the south side of the big baseball field. However, not sure what the area looks like currently, since this view is most likely from pre hurricane.
