quote:really? ive done this since i started driving, and i started driving here
I remember about 10 years ago I was in California (I forgot where, maybe L.A.?) and I noticed on that trip that every single time I was in line to turn left without a designated arrow, the person in front of me would pull into the intersection so when it turned red they could still make the left. I thought it was wild that it happened at every light because I had never seen that here on such a scale, and it was an unspoken rule there.

“Claiming the intersection” is how you’re supposed to drive.

Yep. They are scared of getting involved in the next George Floyd b.s.
Meanwhile we have a generation that has been conditioned to drive like they are in Mario Kart.
I remember when it was a real possibility for getting pulled over for not using a turn signal or going 5 over the speed limit. Now you can drive a 100 on the Interstate with no worried.

There is video of the wreck and it’s pretty terrible. In the video, the motorcycle definitely had a green light. Girl looks to have had green lights too. Far edge of the video, there appear to be two more lights that are red, and not sure what lanes those pertain too. Appears the girl turned left on a normal green light and just never saw the motorcycle.

Where?

It was text to me. It is from a dash cam of a car on South Quad, stopped at the light. The remnants of the wreck end up basically on the hood of this car.

That’s not good.
The last thing you are thinking at that intersection is that you’re about to die in a wreck. It’s normally people going about 30.

as a 15 year Harley operator, I can assure folks that the majority of fatalities are as a result of a left turning car driver that did not see the oncoming vehicle. Serious motorcycle operators are well aware of that and will slow down for potential turners.
Based on the damage and speed estimates the motorcycle driver achieved Darwin Award status, with the biggest regret that he killed another also.

Like someone said in an earlier post, unless something has changed in the last few months, a left turn off of Nicholson onto Nicholson Ext is a protected left turn. If the girl had a green, she was the only one who should've had a green. If the motorcycle had a green, the girl would've had a red

this is never supposed to happen...if the northbound through lanes had a green light, the left turn lane on the southbound side should not have green also...

Worked at volunteer fire dept. many years ago. Motorcycle accidents sent cold chills down our spines.

When our brains are conditioned by encountering 90% four-wheeled vehicles everyday for years on end, our brains just don't adjust suddenly enough to oncoming motorcycles, unfortunately.

You just don't know how horrible it is to see and respond to the reality of motorcycle wrecks. I completely lost any desire I had to own or ride a motorcycle after working for a volunteer fire dept.

What direction was the car with the dash cam going?
EDIT: Just saw it was on south quad stopped at light.

Not necessarily. Have not seen this intersection in years but if she is in left hand turn lane she could have solid Green (not arrow) and still have to yield to north bound traffic.

My wife has worked in the ER for years. With motorcycles, it's not a question of it, but when.

Dispatchers would always warn us if a motorcycle was involved. It instantly changed the mood to dread.
Also, please please wear your seat belts. Many times the cars were so damaged we couldn't tell what make and model it was but the seats were still undamaged. If you stay belted to the seat your chances increase dramatically.

it was stated earlier in the thread that the intersection is "protected only" left hand turning...this means you cannot turn left without the green arrow...

So the left turn lanes there do not also have a solid green or flashing yellow where they have to yield to oncoming traffic but can still cross left if incoming lanes are clear? They just have a protected left turn green/arrow or a red light.
