The Koyukon Athabaskan people who inhabit the area around the mountain refer to the peak as Dinale or Denali. The name is based on a Koyukon word for "high" or "tall".[18] During the Russian ownership of Alaska, the common name for the mountain was Bolshaya Gora (Russian: ??????? ????, bolshaya = Russian for big; gora = Russian for mountain), which is the Russian translation of Denali.[19] It was briefly called Densmore's Mountain in the late 1880s and early 1890s[20] after Frank Densmore, an Alaskan prospector who was the first European to reach the base of the mountain.[21]
In 1896, a gold prospector named it McKinley as political support for then-presidential candidate William McKinley, who became president the following year. The United States formally recognized the name Mount McKinley after President Wilson signed the Mount McKinley National Park Act of February 26, 1917.[22] The Alaska Board of Geographic Names changed the name of the mountain to Denali, which is how it is referred to locally. However, a 1975 request by the Alaska state legislature to the United States Board on Geographic Names to do the same was blocked by Ohio congressman Ralph Regula, whose district included McKinley's hometown of Canton.[23]
Changed for political reasons? frick that. Change it back to Denali.

Everyone who has anything to do with it already calls it Denali

It's pretty much known as Denali in the mountaineering world. I think it should definitely be Denali.
This. The rest of world has mostly referred to the mountain as Denali.

I know they're located in Canada and begged us to be American so that means we get to name their mountains. Got any other civics lessons or are you just grasping at straws now cause you hate freedom?

No problem with this. The people of Alaska want it that way...and it's not like McKinley discovered the mountain for the US or anything.

It was called Denali before it was called Mt. McKinley, Alaskans have petitioned for it to be renamed back to Denali for decades, and yet you retards still find some reason to hate on this simply because "Obama"
I hate you people
I'm not against it because of anything to do with "Obama". I'm just tired of the names of things changing in the name of appeasement. For example, I liked the freakin' Syracuse "Orangemen" rather than the "Orange".
Which of these would you rather have as your mascot?>

I hate you people
The feeling is 100% mutual.

This has to be one of the worst, off-point thread titles I have ever seen.

Changing the name back to the original name is somehow "PC" now? How dumb are you?

It is the latest bid by the president to fulfill his 2008 campaign promise to improve relations between the federal government and the nation’s Native American tribes, an important political constituency that has a long history of grievances against the government.
quote:
Mr. Obama’s trip there starting on Monday will be his first major visit to the state, and he will become the first sitting American president to visit the Alaskan Arctic.
quote:
Mr. Obama has stepped up his engagement with Native Americans since June last year, when he visited Cannon Ball, N.D., in the ancestral lands of Chief Sitting Bull and took part in a powwow to honor American Indians who have served in America’s foreign wars. That was the first visit by a sitting president in 15 years to land under tribal jurisdiction.
“There’s no denying that for some Americans, the deck’s been stacked against them, sometimes for generations, and that’s been true of many Native Americans,” Mr. Obama said at the time. “But if we’re working together, we can make things better.”

So you believe in your heart of hearts that Obama would have still done this if the mountain were named after a black person, a woman, etc?
Get real.

O.k...I get it. I'm just a curmudgeon, who doesn't like change. All of you who called me out on it, win the internet for the day. Congrats.
