I'll be mowing around a third of an acre.
So your yard is basically 100' x 150'. This doesn't need all that big of a lawnmower. Do you have a gate that it needs to go through?
A 42" wide deck would be plenty for you if it will go through a gate. (If you have a fence.) Also, is your yard hilly? It makes a difference on the transaxle you need.

That's not much grass. A decent self-propelled will pay for itself much faster.

I bought a Poulan Pro 42" with a 17.5 Briggs motor and 6 speed manual transmission for $999 brand arse new 3 months ago. Ive been very pleased with this mower. And the price is right. It does everything I ask it to do. Great value for the money

I got a 52" raptor sd recently for $5k
I hope that was for a commercial mower and not residential.
I got the commercial model for my nephew at 5.8K. Badass mower. He's got the work for it and paying me off so I can't complain.

I have a 60" Big Dog Scout MP. Picked it up for $5k. A little higher than I wanted to pay, but cutting 1.35 acres in 35 minutes sure is nice. Also beats paying for a lawn service.

I love my Dixie Chopper Z2. I split the cost with a neighbor . It's very fast and has a mulching blade. Great machine!

He’s cutting 1/3 acre. He doesn’t need a zero turn. A 42” Cub cadet or John Deere should be plenty.

My yard is just under a half acre, I've had a Snapper with 28" deck for about 11 years. I've done routine maintenance (plugs, oil, air filter and battery) every couple years. Just had to replace the drive belt after 11 years. Still runs and cuts great
ETA - It was $1,500 in 2006. 28" deck allows you to drive through standard fence openings.

1/3 an acre is not much- top of the line Honda self propelled at Home Depot
Or Cub cadet if you must ride
Anything else is just spending money for your size yard

More than you need but will last a lifetime Kubota GR2120 diesel not a zero turn model 48" deck.

Gravely ZTX 42" is exactly what you need. Buy from a lawn equipment dealer, not a big box store. 3K and it will last you 10+ years.

If you want to buy used and cut it yourself in the 110°, wait until after the summer when someone who had the same idea as you decides to sell his because it's too hot.
Pay someone to do it.
I spend $200/yr on fuel, oil and shop. So when calculating savings, multiply the cost of your time/hr plus the machine plus yearly operational costs = paying someone may be closer than you think.
on the other hand I need all the Free Exercise I can get, I am not a Gym kind of guy, walk or jog the local area, so walking mower provides more exercise and to me it is worth it.
If you are going rider, well I'd have to think long and hard on cost comparison, cause then you need a trailer to take it in, tow hitch, etc....

He can do it with that and it is a good mower but he specifically said he would like a rider. That is why I am asking him question specifically designed for his needs.
And frick Home Depot. I bought a washer with an extended warranty from them. It lasted 4 years. They went to great pains to be as unhelpful as possible and took 6 weeks to resolve it. They also asked for my number to be able to contact me.
They never contacted me but telemarketers started hammering my cell the next day. frick them and HD too.
