im assuming this is a monument refrence? which i do agree was a pretty big disgrace but i dont think id be blaming any of the cities issues on a bunch of white middle-class, hipster kids.

Errr, not really. Much more likely to get robbed in car jacked, mugged, or injured in new orleans than practically anywhere else.

Where it's statistically far less likely? Sure

Sorry but I don't feel unsafe in old Metairie, ever

Its the perfect city for one in their 20s looking to sort of 'extend' the college experience.
Just use discipline to not get too sucked in to the area's drinking culture.
Most people grow up and recognize living and raising a family in New Orleans is not sustainable for the long term....too expensive now, too many quality of life issues, crime.etc.

I'm happy for you. I don't ever feel unsafe in my neighborhood, either. If I didn't feel safe in New Orleans, I would probably move.

What neighborhood do you live?
Posted on 6/14/17 at 1:32 pm to Lester Earl
Why? So you can tell me how unsafe it is?

I'm not trying to convince you of anything. But judging by that response you already know the risks of living where you do. You speak like someone who has never had a friend or family member fall victim to crime in Nola. When that happens you'll change your tune I'm quite sure, as it is bound to happen.

Warning, I'm about to get on a soap box.
New Orleans isn't perfect. My neighborhood isn't perfect. There are things I really dislike about my neighborhood, namely the pervasive litter.
When we bought our house last year, I reached out to our councilperson about the litter. I got in touch with another neighbor who also was pissed about the litter and we started meeting. We now have an official neighborhood association. We met last night and had reps from the mayor's office, council person's office and NOPD there. It was super helpful and productive.
IDK, man. Nowhere is perfect but New Orleans is great. And instead of bitching on the internet, I'm actually taking actions to change the things I don't like about the city.

You're right. I don't personally know anyone who has been the victim of any violent crime in New Orleans. I know someone whose apartment was broken into when they were at work in NOLA a couple of years ago, but the exact same thing happened to me when I was living in BR. Crime happens and it sucks.

Meh, stay uptown and find a nice ASH/Country Day/McGhee gal to court. You'll be uptown royalty for years to come. The anti Nola peasants want to be this.
You and your gf still live with her parents in that house by the park?

You're in a good area. Within walking distance to many of my favorite hangouts in the city (Delachaise, Fat Harry's, Superior Seafood for happy hour). As others have stated, don't venture out on the lakeside of St. Charles at night (walking). You also have Martin's Wine Cellar really nearby which is a good spot to pick up beer, wine, liqour, and they have good sandwiches for lunch.
Not in the immediate area but Courtyard Brewery is a really cool spot to grab a beer.
Mardi Gras is going to be really inconvenient for you after the allure wears away

Went there for the first time a few months ago. Really cool spot with a pretty decent tap list.
ETA: how in the world does this post deserve downvotes?

I'm not saying Nola isn't great. But there is no one that is immune to the crime. And most people think they are safe until it hits home.
Glad you are doing things about the litter. That is a problem for sure.

I hope your wife let you keep the apartment when she divorced you
