That's the part of town I'm living in right now. Austerlitz St specifically. As far as safety I have not had any issues, but being alert and aware is the best bet. They have private security that drives around all hours, and is very helpful.
As far as groceries I typically walk to breaux mart on mag or rouses on tchoup unless I have to get a lot then I will drive. I find it's easier to avoid parking issues though if I'm up to carrying my shite

Shop at rouses on tchoup. Lock your doors and don't leave valuables in your car. That's a decent area you'll be fine

Could you elaborate more on the range of this private security that drives around? I'm on st Charles but on the north (westbound) side of it. I'm curious if that is within their boundary.

It is a fat guy that drives in a marked "Security" car. All you can hope for is that he happens to be driving on your street so he can provide a witness testimony in the trial for your murder or mugging.

You sound white.
Not welcome in New Orleans unless maybe if you're a liberal cuck.
You're joking but those kind of jokes will get you raped and/or killed in NO. And the police may or may not even investigate your rape/murder.

You're in a good location so ignore the idiotic responses. Do you have a car? Nola RTA are not that reliable. Although, St. Charles is getting a face lift with new roads. Enjoy, I can think of a better city for a new college grad. A lot of festivals, bars, night life etc. just be aware of your surroundings.

Pretty much what he said and what a previous poster said.
Lock your car/house doors. Don't leave valuable stuff in plain sight in your car.
You're in walking distance to Columns, Fat Harry's, Superior Grill, Delachaise, Superior Seafood. All good spots for a drink.

Try to stay on the river side of St Charles. Anywhere from Jefferson over to Louisiana Ave should be fine. Louisiana to Jackson gets a bit sketchy. Don't go past Jackson.
You are living in an urban area. Lock your doors. Try to have good lighting around your home. Keep bushes and shrubbs cut low. Don't go outside walking to your car counting your cash in your hands. That sort of thing.
Gas and electric are through Entergy New Orleans. They are horrible. Water is through the city. They ware worse than horrible. Internet/tv/phone you can choose Cox or AT&T. Both are pretty bad but I find AT&T is a bit cheaper for their crappy service.
The streetcar is a fun and safe method of transport, but it's not kept on the best schedule, so it's not an option if you have to be somewhere at a certain time. But if you don't have a deadline, it's great. City buses have gotten better but are still light years behind other cities.
Breaux Mart and Rouses should handle most of your grocery needs... there is a WalMart too.
Keep your wits about you and it will be fine. That area can change pretty quickly from block to block especially on the lake side of St. Charles. If an area looks like it's not a good idea to go through, don't. If you want to run, do it in the middle of the day or join a gym.
