I reached out to our councilperson about the litter. I got in touch with another neighbor who also was pissed about the litter and we started meeting. We now have an official neighborhood association. We met last night and had reps from the mayor's office, council person's office and NOPD there. It was super helpful and productive.
So you're on the litter task force?
Keep us posted

Glad you are doing things about the litter. That is a problem for sure.
It pisses me off like you would not believe. I used to pick it up in my neighborhood, but then I literally couldn't bend over after I was like 7 months pregnant.
My biggest contribution to remedying the litter problem is in my classroom. I would have my students pick up litter anytime we saw it (hallways, playground, etc.). I taught them about citizenship and we discussed ways they could be good citizens as kids. If they learned nothing else, it was that littering is trashy and disgusting and you should pick it up when you see it even if you didn't put it there.
It's definitely a cultural thing. I see people walking my neighborhood almost every day dropping or throwing litter on the ground. There's absolutely no shame about it, either. Super infuriating.

It's definitely an uphill battle, that's for sure.

There are things much worse than a long commute.

Man you people are such wieners. New Orleans is a great place to live. I have to imagine that most of you BR-thumpers never lived in New Orleans. Y'all certainly aren't helping with the brain drain situation by constantly recommending people to stay away from the city and advocating for Houston so hard.

might want to bring up the issue of NOPD littering
i literally saw a cop toss out one of those 32oz big gulp styrofoam cups from his cruiser a couple months ago.
my jaw dropped so i didnt even think to snap a picture until it was too late

In terms of things to do, yes it is a great place to live. Once you take off the veil though, the ROI is pretty horrible. High cost of living, poor infrastructure, bad schools, depleted police force, horrible public transit, stupid politicians, crime, lack of jobs, etc.

I agree with all of this. New Orleans is amazing, but as you've said, the ROI is terrible. That is really the only reason why I'm moving away. I'm cool with paying for expensive real estate and private schools, but you don't get much return on those expenses.

Some of these “every southern city with population over 200k people” places are booming right now. What is booming in New Orleans other than high priced apartments?

My brother moved down last summer. He is a few blocks from the Rouses on Tchoupitalas. He has had zero issues there. Visited this weekend. No problems anywhere we went. Lots of little bars and restaraunts thoughout the neighbohood, so he walks alot.
Not where I want to live though. Have to park on the street, crowded, too close to the neighbors. I need more room.
Good luck!

I never said Nola was booming but there of course a lot of jobs and a whole lot of money in the city. If you're fortunate enough to have a really good job in the city I could not think of a better place to live.

It is a great place to live. If you can, stay in uptown and generally south of St. Charles. You can live north of St. Charles and be fine but the nuances of which areas to pick are too hard to describe in a post.
If you look at neighborhoods like West Riverside / Audubon there is almost no violent crime at all. You can find a half double there but if you are younger and want to be around more transplants, look closer to downtown...probably the warehouse district.
Also, if you keep asking the OT for advice on your lifestyle you will end up in a Houston suburb in a very short amount of time. Goodluck

You've made an excellent choice! Others will mock you and point out the city's flaws, but I salute your bravery. Anyone can live life in safe and prosperous city, but not you. Here are some of the things you can look forward to:
Your life will be in danger on a daily basis. There's nothing like leaving one of the finer dining establishments in the country, and then being unsure whether you will be robbed as you walk to your car. (spoiler alert: you will be robbed).
Your career will stall and falter in a weak and rapidly declining economic market. You will watch as your friends that live in other states earn raises and bonuses you only dream about.
Planning to have kids? Great! They can attend public schools that I would put up against the schools in any third world nation. It's sad when the only reasonable option is to pay $8,000 a year to send them to private school.
Want to buy a home? Don't worry about investing in an area below sea level that flooded recently. Instead, go ahead and pay $350+ per square foot for a home that needs work and is a stone's throw away from a high crime area.
Unhealthy living options? We've got them in spades. The food is excellent and will contribute to a short life span.
Enjoy!

Curious. Where do you come up with this I've seen you post something similar to this before.

Geese. I wonder if BabyCakes hates his life.

Well, he claims Northshore, so he probably doesn't hate his life all that much
