Actually I think the Central Thruway opens up Central in this scenario as well as the northern part of Livingston (like Watson).
Good point. LP just sucks outside of Bass Pro.

Best neighborhoods (just in general), in my opinion would be the Garden District, Mid City (Capital Heights, Bernhard Terrace, Old Goodwood, 100 Oaks, ect), and Southdowns in BR. As far as suburbs are concerned, LP is the worst with parts of AP being the best. However, Central and Zachary are in the middle and easily the best for traffic if one doesn't work on the south side of town.
For Ascension Parish, Prarieville will be most convenient for BR and will give you the most accessibility to stores and restaurants. The drawbacks are generally smaller lot, higher prices, tons of traffic in town, and houses that all look the same. Dutchtown is also the best public high school in the Parish (except for music (STA), Robotics (EA), and Sports medicine (STA)).
Gonzales has slightly worse public schools (EA is a little rougher than Dutchtown), more rental property, lower prices, more varied house plans, lower traffic within town (except on Highway 30) and similar levels of convenience while being farther from Baton Rouge and closer to plants in Geismar.
St. Amant is not as great of a school as Dutchtown (except in Sports Medicine and music) but better than East Ascension (except in robotics). Here you get the least amount of traffic in town, the least options for grocery stores and restaurants, and most varied house plans. St. Amant is least convenient for Baton Rouge, but is still ok for getting to Geismar and much better for commuting to the River Parishes or Donaldsonville. It is also more convenient for getting to restaurants and bars along the Amite. The issue is inconsistent neighborhoods (mansion next door to a meth trailer, next door to a pasture, next door to a gas station, next door to another mansion, ect), and distance getting places. Both of those can be assuaged by going to the neighborhood of Galvez, which lies between Prarieville and St. Amant, but sends their kids to St. Amant. For more consistent neighbors and an "upper class" living, there's Pelican Point for golf and the Diversion Canal for boating.

Even if going private, I would live across the river. Cost of living is WAY lower.
Lots of new houses and businesses out in Brusly last time I was there.....but you are getting off on Nicholson (toward LSU or downtown) or taking the old bridge to one of the plants, that commute can be frustrating.
Very low costs of living there and the people seem to be very nice.
Brusly is solid, but I would avoid public schools in Port Allen though.

Going from private into BTR Public Magnet system this year, hopefully its as good as advertised.

I would live near your work. Sitting in Traffic is stressful and expensive. Plenty of good neighborhoods, private (Mercy) and even public (magnet track) schools in BR. New Super just started and is on a tear...Mid-City is great btw. also Tara, Old Goodwood, Westminster, Westdale Heights, Inniswold, K-worth.
Send child to best school available whether that be private or public. 1 kid in private school equals long commute and sitting in traffic from a financial cost. Those areas you mentioned are either long commutes into BR or vastly outpacing the infrastructure.

If working downtownish and living across the river like I do, I have only had traffic twice in the past year.
I drive in around 7:15. Leave work for 4:40ish, and I'm back across the river by 4:45.
I've had at least a 50 mile round trip commute since kindergarten, so driving isn't an issue.

For public schools, live in west BR, ascension Parrish, or denheim springs. If your paying for private school I would reccommend mid city
I'd change this up just a little bit...
Public: Zachary, Dutchtown, or LP
Private: Mid-City, Goodwood, Southdowns

I'm not sure if I would go with school advice from this guy...

I can sell you a house on Highland Rd. 1/2 mile from the South Gates of LSU right now.

What price range are you looking at for a house and school tuition?
Posted on 8/3/15 at 12:22 pm to Shug1957
Don't move to west Baton Rouge. The traffic gets worse by the day
Posted on 8/3/15 at 11:46 pm to brodeo
I'd recommend Dutchtown or St. Amant. Dutchtown has been the highest scoring traditional public high school in the state for the past few years and St. Amant isn't far behind.

I like it here in central.

Where are you coming from and how much do you know about Baton Rouge?

Just depends on where you working to where I would move.
This.
If you're downtown or even mid-city then Zachary and Central are the way to go. If you're working in South Baton Rouge, OLOL, CB&I, etc then I think Prairieville is a better choice.
Don't under-estimate our rush-hour traffic, especially in South Baton Rouge and along the interstates.

Thanks for posting this, saved me the effort of maybe having to post the same thing in six months or so.
Different take on the same question (some of y'all kind of answered this anyway): if schools weren't an issue, where would you live? We have 2 little ones that either won't be in school yet or that I'd be able to home school for the 3 years we'd be there.
Husband would be working at LSU and wants to be able to potentially bike to campus for work. We don't especially want to buy because this is probably just a 3 years and done assignment for us. We need 3-4 bedrooms and I want about 2000 sq ft. I don't want to be living with a bunch of college kids.
Where would you look?
