I was living there recently in east Austin on MLK Blvd. New apartments by the metro station to ride to downtown. I would still live there if job had not relocated me to Dallas.
About 3 miles away, the former airport (Mueller) has very nice apartments and houses and good retail support (HEB, Home Depot, good restaurants, Dell Children's hospital. Pricey compared to MLK location, but great outdoor and walking paths throughout.

Strangely enough have an opportunity to move with the wife to a Austin for a new job. Office would be downtown right by the Capitol. We’re flying down in a few weeks to look at apartments.
What’s the train experience like? Reliable? Easy? I’m guessing from other info in this thread we should look at places more North than South...

The hipster thing is so overblown it’s not even funny anymore. I bet a lot of people that think that have never set foot in Austin.

i think 2 years ago i was where you are now. moving to this area with the intent to have kids and starting up north.
we ended up choosing round rock. nice houses for $300-400k, good public schools, not too far from everything, also not in the middle of everything.
i work in the domain and the commute is 20-25min in the morning and evening.
we've very happy with where we're at but would like to be closer to a green belt and/or the hill country. that's about our only complaint so far.

I’m kind of one. Definitely one by the OTs standards.
I work in tech startups

Unfortunately the rail line does not get very close to the capital. If you are working near there, then yes you may want to find a place ‘north central’ or east.
If your budget is $2000 and you don’t have a ton of furniture, you could live downtown.

Update for anyone who may be interested: We've signed a lease!
The roundtrip drive from Georgetown to my office has been about 2.5 hours each day. While I'm grateful to my in-laws for buying me some time by letting me crash at their place, I'm ready to ditch this drive asap.
The pricing wasn't as bad as many here led me to believe, although I did end up spending more than my original budget and making some compromises. We found a brand new complex (or a brand new addition to an existing complex) that was by far the nicest apartments we viewed.
It's located in Southwest Austin off Southwest Parkway and we got a 2 bedroom/2 bathroom for $1683 a month. It's about a 10-15 minute drive to the restaurants and bars on South Lamar. It's got fantastic amenities and a really quiet, surreal surrounding.
I originally wanted to be closer to downtown, but my wife really wanted a 2 bed/bath instead of a one. Our budget was going to get us a much older building at that price and none of the options stood out much. In reality, we only go out on weekends and a 15-20 minute drive isn't a big deal (Uber is always there when you need it!). The drive to work should only be 15-20 minutes each way as well.
Appreciate all the advice and feedback! Let me know of some of your favorite places to hang out, get outdoors, and drink in the city.

My only advice is to live on the same side of the river where you work and as close to your office as you can afford.
If you want to experience all the great things about Austin do NOT live in a suburb (Round Rock, Cedar Park, Buda, etc)
