OP, use the Polygon function to draw the exact radius/area that you would like to live in Austin and choose an apartment from the list that populates.

Bee Caves is a decent spot. There are a couple of complexes in the Hill Country Galleria that are next door to shopping, restaurants, bars... You’re about 10 mins from Barton Creek from there. Maybe 20+ mins from downtown though if you’re aiming to being close to DT.
Check out apartments on 2222 as well. Right near the intersection of 2222 & 360 are some nice apartments that sit on top of the hills and overlook everything. You’d be less than 10 mins from work, maybe 10 minutes to Arboretum, 15 minutes to the Domain, 20 mins to downtown.

The cost of Austin is greatly exaggerated. The "cool" areas are expensive, but you can live in the city for a reasonable price.
This. It all depends on what part of the city you want to live in. Since you'll be working in west Austin, I agree with the suggestion of looking in the Bee Caves area, also maybe Far West. There are a few apartment communities located on Capital of Texas Highway (360), but I don't how nice and/or expensive they are. Another option might be to live in the Arboretum area, but then you'll have to deal with traffic on 360, which can back up because of all of the stop lights.
I'd also suggest driving around neighborhoods where you might want to live and see if there are any residents advertising apartments for rent. That's how I found my house. The elderly lady that owns it didn't feel comfortable putting an ad on Craigslist.
Anyhow, welcome to Austin. It's a great city. The liberals won't kill you and the traffic is no worse that in Baton Rouge. At least we have a reason for it (a metro area of over a million people). You seldom find traffic backed up because of a jackknifed 18 wheeler or a car on fire, like you do daily on I-10.

You’ll be ordering coffee drinks like grande cafe latte skinny extra extra whip 2 Splenda before you know it. Also you will be changing your party affiliation to democrat by next year.

I’m sure this was funnier in your head.

My advice is to live on the side of the river where your work will be located. This will go the furthest toward minimizing the traffic choke points.

Don't move to Bee Cave. It's lame and has about two bars. You should look at hyde park first.

You’ll can a 3 bed 2 bath to rent in for $1600-1700.
Or you can get a roommate and pay half that. That’s what a lot of the young professionals types I know do. Lots of people with rooms for lease.
