Your son needs to grow a pair and deal with it. If he wants to play football and cries over that imagine when someone hits him hard in practice.

sounds like its too long, trim off a bit of length and reevaluate.

The one from the school is more than fine.

Find instructions on how to boil then bite. If there’s some overhang past the molar mold cut it off.

The overhang and poor fit are what is causing him to gag.

He doesn’t want to bite so hard that he’s nearly all the way through in some spots.

As an aside, when he’s tackled and goes to catch himself on the fall tell him to bend that elbow. Fractured radius is an extremely common middle school football injury.

Academy had an absolute shite ton of youth sized ones that require no boil and are designed to allow easier mouth breathing, even when you bite down on them. My son has used them for the past 3 years or so for flag and now for tackle football. Never had one complaint from him on them

Just be relieved that he has a gag reflex.

Then I cannot stress enough your insistence that he wears a cup at all times, including practices.

A cup for football? I've never heard of anyone wearing a cup while playing football... weird.

You sound like a good Mama to me.

I'd probably make an appointment with my dentist and get advice from there, if the dentist is competent to offer such advice.

What are the requirements regarding mouthpieces from the school/state body?

SISU makes relatively cheap, unobtrusive, breathable mouthpieces for youths and adults. You can find them on Amazon. Probably want to go with one of the max toughness ones. A lot of people swear by custom Gladiator guards, as well, but those are more expensive and a little more involved.

I really hope that getting a mouthguard from a dentist for a middle school kid is the lamest thing I hear all day. But I doubt it.

I can tell you this. My son chipped a tooth within five minutes of his first lacrosse game bc he didn’t wear a mouthpiece.

Like others have said, there are a dozen different brands and sizes at Academy. None are too expensive but the cheap ones seem to work fine if they’re molded with hot water.

Agreed. He says he played 3rd grade through college. After reading his post either he's full of shite or he's Michael Sam!

I used to cut out the back enough where it wouldn’t gag me. Even a couple of centimeters can help. The mouthpieces fit different people differently.
