It is a well known mother/son, father/daughter dynamic. I have twin daughters and we get along very well. They argue with my wife much more. I strongly suspect if they were boys the opposite would happen.
It is also why you absolutely MUST treat your daughters and wife with respect. You teach the daughters to demand that from possible boyfriends. They learn by watching how you treat their Mother.

My wife and daughter (15) don’t have blow up fights but it does seem like every coversation turns into an argument at some level - even over stupid shite

I found that it becomes more of a fight to get in the last word. While one is talking the other is thinking about what she will say next. Most guys just want their parents to shut up so they can walk away, but the girls want to be the last to speak.

I saw a story on this several yrs ago by some psychologist and he summed it up as Mother/Daughter relationships fall into two categories. They are either inseparable best friends or mortal enemies.
Mine was mortal enemies. Daughter is in mid 20's now and things are much better but they still cannot agree on much. Distance just keeps the arguements at bay. Oddly enough, it makes no difference on her maternal support level. My wife still dotes on her and will give her anything she wants... go figure.
