Mother roasted over vegetable 'hack' for saving money while shopping

With millions of families worried about their household budgets, many people are sharing tips and hacks for saving money anywhere they can. But one mum's trick for saving money on vegetables at the supermarket has seen her be ridiculed online, after perhaps taking the idea of cutting costs a little too literally.
The woman took to social media to share how she makes sure she only pays for what she is going to use when doing her grocery shop. Mimi Carter posted a video on TikTok about buying broccoli, which has now racked up 5.5 million views and thousands of comments.
In the video, captioned "snip, snip", she is seen holding broccoli stems detached from the crown while standing by fresh produce. She says of the stems in her hand: "I am not paying for these, so I just..." as she tosses them back with the rest of the broccoli on the shelf.
It then cuts to her showing off her bagged up broccoli, each with most of the stem cut off, as she adds: "I am only going to pay for what I am going to eat." In a follow-up video from her kitchen at home, Mimi explains that sometimes you can just break off the broccoli stems if they are long enough, reports The Mirror.
But she said she usually just cuts them off - and pulls a pocket knife out of her waistband to demonstrate. Mimi then picks up the lopped off stems as she says: "I just leave these for the store. Y'all can have it, I don't need it. I wash my hands of it."

Stay ready so you don’t have to get ready

What a sense of entitlement. Goddamn white people.
Wish I could do this with crawfish and pay for only 40pounds per tail meat

That's not a "hack", that's theft.

The value of the remaining broccoli scraps she left.

The item is priced based on the weight with stem attached. There’s a different price for shrimp with heads and without, you can’t get the without heads for the with head price per pound.

What a fantastic idea! I could just pick the marshmallows out of the lucky charms and not have to pay for the stuff I don't like.

Isn’t broccoli usually sold by the unit, not the LB?

I hate what I’m about to say:
Does it explicitly state that anywhere or is it just assumed?
God that felt dirty to type out. I feel gross. I hate lawyers.

If it’s based by unit, she’s saving nothing and just creating waste. She could compost that broccoli stem or she could even use it in a nice broccoli and cheese soup.

No

I've seen it both ways.
But one time I watched an episode of Iron Chef where Morimoto used the stems in something, and I've never not used them since. You take the outer layer off and you have a nice piece to work with in a dice or a stick. Sweeter than the rest of the broccoli and a good texture.
It's pretty wasteful to only eat the flowers.

I actually like the broccoli stem. Peel it and cook it a little longer, it eats fine.
This woman is just another attention whore. The real hack is to eat the broccoli in the store
Yup.
Did you know that broccoli, kale, cauliflower and several other veggies all come from the same root vegetable?
Brussels sprouts too!

I mean, you could, but likely at exorbitant rates.

Makes sense - if you’re paying $10/lb for brocolli.

I'm gonna do that with bone-in ribeyes and bring the bone back after I eat the meat. Tastes better when you cook with the bone, but no way to eat it. Why should I pay for it. They can give me back my "core charge".
