The biggest thing for me is how can a parent pay money for their kid to play for a youth coach like that or an organization that would hire a coach like that.

The biggest thing for me is how could you ask such an important question without using proper punctuation?

Driving back to BR area from Tennessee the kids and wife were excited to stop in Laurel because they had seen the hometown show. When I walked into the Men’s restroom at a gas station- which was unlocked and saw a woman that looked like the “mother of the year” sitting on the toilet I noped out and we had to go to a different exit

Props to her for supporting her kid’s extracurricular activities??

Why does it matter how long the shitty umpire has been calling balls strikes for?

In my younger, fitter days, after a day of umpiring 6 or 7 games in a row and dealing with parents and coaches, walking to the car, I could barely keep my eyes open...

And this was 20 years ago, it's only gotten worse...

and the worst ages are the ages leading up to HS... that's when reality starts to set in that little billy isn't going to be playing much longer.

I’d bet rec.

Reasons?
travel ball is expensive... travel ball also pays umps much more than rec, 2 umps would never bail on a travel game.

I love sports & considered being a HS Football/ Basketball referee in my semi-retirement. Pass .
Sad to hear that there is a shortage of officials , but I don't think I want the abuse.
I can't speak for hoops but HS football is not bad at all. coaches and admins know full well the shortage is affecting their sports - at least 10 hs baseball games were cancelled this year due to not enough umpires available(it's the same in every locale).

the shortage partly stems from you do a lot of non HS games to gain experience and that turns some people off.

The main problem comes from coaches who think they are in the Super Bowl or World Series. Then the parents.

Bigger problem ....no one knows the rules. I've read the books hundreds of times. You don't want to be a half assed umpire and face me on a baseball field. You will lose.

Football? Greater problem. What rulebook do you use National Federation (High School), NCAA , Modified NCAA, NFL? When the coaches and fans get confused ....most of your time is spent trying to reason with the fool why he's wrong.

My favorite retorts. "NFL rule coach and I'm not getting paid enough for that."

Yep. I umped for a summer. People aren't afraid to vocalize their lack of understanding of the game.

Youth sports officials are heroes in my eyes. They put up with more bullshite in those games than any of the people heckling them do at their own jobs. They get paid shite but they still put up with the abuse because they love the game and want the kids to be able to play. It’s one of the most thankless jobs that exists. Maybe people will realize it once they chase all of them away and little Jaxsonn can’t play anymore cause no one wants to put up with his shitty parents.

Bubba, we're at that point now. I've been a youth and HS sports official on and off for 35 years. This is the lowest participation level for officials I can ever remember. And 98+% of the problem is entitled parents. It's a rare weekend that I haven't sent a parent from the sidelines over something that they are completely wrong in their interpretation.

Parents need to understand a few important things: 1) This ain't the World Series, World Cup, etc. It's for a damn medal/ring/trophy that won't mean shite to your kid in 5 years. 2) Your kid won't earn a scholarship based on this weekend's performance, but your idiotic histrionics will damn sure cost them one (I know a lot of college coaches and one of the first things they use to cut kids from their recruiting list is poor parental behavior). 3) Parents aren't needed to have a game. Referees/umpires/officials are.

Soccer clubs and travel baseball teams all over Atlanta are canceling and rescheduling games every weekend because there simply aren't enough officials willing to cover all the games scheduled. In Georgia, it's estimated we are down 40% in terms of certified baseball, soccer and basketball officials. COVID had a lot to do with it, but stupid parents are just as big a factor. We aren't paid like a professional official, so don't expect the level of expertise that you're going to get from one. I know I'm a good official, but I don't do it for a living. If you want that level of officiating, pony up $1500 per official per game and you'll get them.
