My dad left my brother and I in the truck once while he ran into the grocery store. I was 7 and my brother a few years older. I shifted into neutral and the truck started rolling backward through the parking lot. Needless to say, I couldn't sit down for a week after my dad got a hold of me. On a positive note, this was back in the late 80's, before social media turned everything into a political or legal issue. Otherwise, my dad would have probably been arrested and become a public figure of shame.
So on that note, don't leave your kids alone in the car regardless of how long you are going to be.

It's getting overwhelming. No peanuts or chocolate at Halloween because of someone's little allergic daffodil. Can't offend anyone. Can't spank your kids. Can't let them play outside by themselves. Can't leave them in a safe car for 5 minutes, even if you are looking at them through the window.
In the past, we played with Lawn Darts.
Had BB gun wars (and you Really can shoot your eye out kids. Take it from Uncle Fr33)
We played outside from sunup to sundown without adult supervision.
We ate peanuts and gluten and dairy. We drank from the hose pipe. We swam in the ponds and creeks.
We rode bikes without helmets and camped out all by ourselves.
We built dangerous contraptions and went on adventures and lived life not afraid of every bogeyman!
And we've got the scars to show for it. The broken bones. The eyes that got shot out.
Maybe some of us didn't make it. Accidents happen. That's life. But it's better to live free, with all the danger and uncertainty, than to live safe in a bubble. To never take chances, never take risks.
And if you subject your child to a life so coddled and protected, they'll never learn independence. And when mommy isn't there to make all the mean things go away, in the real world...they'll get eaten alive.
It's a parents job to teach their young how to survive. And that doesn't always mean total safety.

Appropriate, yes. Safe, nearly 100% , more likely to be struck by lightning than being abducted by the boogie man. Yet, going outside when it is raining is oddly legal. Helicopter parents are going to helicopter.

That is too young IMO.
They need to be old enough to be about to roll down the windows, lock the doors, etc if something happened, like they get too hot or who knows.
8 years old or so if probably about the right age for most children
