Well there's your problem. I wouldn't leave a 5 yr old for an extended time, anything more than getting a few items... But you should know what your kid is capable of handling and trust them to do it. Parents like you are the reason kids today are such worthless sacks of shite. You hover over them and don't let them do anything or have any independence because you don't trust them enough to give them a chance.
ETA: and you can leave the air and radio on without the engine running if you're that scared your kid is gonna put the car in gear.

This is something I agree with. Just last year some mom came into my 5 year old daughter's K5 class and checked lunches under the guise of "helping out the teacher" at lunch and proceeded to throw away anything that did not say where it was produced because of her kid's alleged nut allergy, which given all the material she sends out in emails to parents almost daily about her kid I have to assume is all bullshite any way just for the attention. That dumb bitch has been banned from campus this year thankfully but her stupid kid is on the soccer team and that's a whole different circle of hell. Now she has grass allergies.

I left my 18 month old strapped in his car seat the other night. He needed milk, ran to gas station, parked in spot by the door, got out, locked and remote started the car, got milk and was back in the car in about 90 seconds.
I wouldn't leave him in while I went into a grocery or knew it would take a while, and I don't know that I'd leave him if he could get out of his seat on his own, but I'm not about to get him out for a 2 minute stop where I can see the car.

Exactly, there is no reason for me to stop to put gas, then get them out of the car when they are likely sleeping. Get them up get them all ready, walk across the parking lot into the store, dealing with them wanting candy and other crap. Then getting them situated back in the car.

I'm cool with running into gas stations with my 2 year old in the truck. Gas stations have full glass fronts so I can keep an eye on the truck and normally very short lines for a quick in and out.
Walmart or grocery stores though? Nope. Not cool IMO.
