The Confederate government wasn't exactly the champion of civil liberties and individual freedoms.

I'm not defending them, just saying that's the obvious answer from their perspective.

The difference between patriotism and nationalism is that the patriot is proud of his country for what it does, and the nationalist is proud of his country no matter what it does; the first attitude creates a feeling of responsibility, but the second a feeling of blind arrogance that leads to war.

They were trying to overthrow the US government? Must’ve missed that part.

Do you know what traitor means? I did not say they staged a coup.

Please learn what words mean if you're going to be a smartass.

No Texas??? Is it because they have Mexicans? Is it because they border Mexico? Extremely racist and nationality-phobic.

We got entirely too much of the latter on here and not nearly enough of the former. I'd say that holds across the country as well.

dont think they're mutually exclusive. My point is they all start out as traitors. What happens after that is another discussion. I'm not trying to argue pro or con on the civil war. I'd be hard pressed to pick a side on that.

If you decide to rebel against the government, you better make sure you win.

Otherwise you are just a treasonous bastard and not a revolutionary.

Yeah, I wouldn’t exactly call what they did traitorous as it wasn’t (and still isn’t iirc) unconstitutional to secede.

Then why did the Confederacy consider those pockets of the south who refused to join the confederacy and actively withdrew from the Confederacy traitors?

Was that stipulation in their "Constitution"?

That's just perspective though. You can fail and still have been right. You're speaking from the government perspective the way I take it.

You're right, you better win because a government absolutely delights in taking down those who threaten its existence.

The Constitution of the United States disagrees.

Article 3 Section 3

quote:

Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying War against them

Can’t speak for Vermont but New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Maine are all very patriotic.

My ancestors fought with Washington to create the United States.

You think they were going to fight against all they helped build because some slave owners in the other part of Virginia didn't like the results of a free (at least in non-southern states) election?
