Kubrick recreated that photo in Full Metal Jacket

I believe that was during Tet, which was a decisive victory for the US. However, the propagandists in the media were more than happy to carry the NVA's water.

photo of the former POW being greeted by his family is pretty sad, his whore wife had been cheating on him the whole time, had accepted marriage proposals from three dudes, the first thing the guy was given upon his release was a "Dear John" letter, handed to him by a chaplain, that had been withheld why he was in captivity

I think people were freaked out by it because the guy was a Viet Cong fighter in civilian clothing. Most people tend to not look at context so they'd probably assume it was just some random civilian getting shot, maybe?

The Geneva Convention explicitly authorizes summary execution of any enemy or spy caught in a wartime act not wearing a uniform

Not many people know that ANZAC and ROK forces also sent troops to Vietnam. The ROK forces were known to be very brutal and feared by the NVA

Dad served alongside the RoK Marines at Da Nang. I have a RoK Marine blouse. He said they HATED the Vietnamese...no matter what brand of Vietnamese North or South. The RoKs were some of the hardest fighters in I Corps.

As far as the ANZACs...the Australian Bushmen were probably #2 for hardiness. Dad used to trade with them...he told me he'd see them go in the bush...and a couple weeks later they'd return....and then they'd hear the kill reports...Tough SOBs.

That building is not the US embassy in Saigon. It's some other building in that area.

Most iconic photo of the Vietnam War? Didnt this guy have it coming though? I recall something about the story but dont want to look it up, would just cause me to be researching story after story for more hours. Would end up in the Korean war down some rabbit tunnel.

Depends on whos perspective. That is a picture of an NVA officer executing a south Vietnamese citizen or "political dissident"
